The belt don't fit!

What a nightmare! It just won't stop!

First my idler broke, leaving my serpentine belt threadbare, but intact. Bought belt, bought idler (Autozone).

First, they sold me the wrong belt (111.5"), I got it on, but only by leaving off ome of the idler pullies (left the pulley in place, just didn't thread the belt over THAT one). BIG MISTAKE!

50 miles from home, and NOWHERE near a Diesel shop, the belt not only snapped, but took out both transmission cooling lines, AND a water hose (to heater, maybe?). Lost all the tranny fluid.

When I got the "right" (113") belt, it STILL didn't fit. I compared it to the (threadbare but still intact) old belt and it was two inches shorter. I ALSO noticed for the first time that the OLD belt was too thin, and only had 5 "ridges". I TRIED to get a 115" belt from Autozone, but the biggest they list is 114.5", which I bought (always can return it if n.g.). It is the correct width.

I cut back the transmission cooler hoses, and put new clamps on. Taped the water hose so it looks like a cacoon, and the tape is special stuff that supposedly holds 100 p.s.i. at 180 degs. For now, the too-skinny and threadbare belt is on, which I will TRY to switch for the 114.5". At least the truck is home now.

Even with the Ambulance package, the belt just isn't supposed to be that long ...right?

AMMO (lookin' like "Sambo" tonight!)

PS: The water line that I taped and want to replace is a (guess) 1" hose coming from the bottom of the radiator on the Passenger side, which terminates with a crimped fitting that makes a transition to metal tubing (like a fuel line uses). Is it a heater line? Can I simply use a pipe cutter on the tubing, and step up in sizes with pipes, hose, and clamps? What IS it anyway?

Re: The belt don't fit!

Ammo,
I am going to assume you have the strut on your tensioner? I had issues getting a belt from AZ and just went to Ford w/ the old one. Part # and size is at home. I bought 3 from AZ, and 1 from Ford.

The line is a coolant line for the E4OD. IIRC, It runs coolant to the bootom of the rad to help get the tranny to operating temp and assist in cooling the tranny fluid. (More for operating temp) Only us slush box owners have that line.

Re: The belt don't fit!

I can help with the small hose. All its doing is sending hot coolant from the heater return line bypassing the radiator cooling area so the transmission oil cooler sees heat sooner and warms up faster to operating temp. You can just replace the heater hose and just plug the bottom radiator where it dumps in at. That fitting will be orficed way down so don't be too surprised when you pull it off. Another Ford better idea that needs to go away. P.S. I hear Ford charges around $100.00 for this hose with the metal line.

Re: The belt don't fit!

I have the exact same problem with my truck. I can't find a belt to fit. Advance Auto calls for a 111.5" belt, but its too short - and they tell me that's the longest one they carry. CarQuest's longest belt is a 112.0", which is still too short. Keep us posted because I'll need to replace the belt soon.

Re: The belt don't fit!

Isn't there three different style tensioners? Doesn't the tensioner style determine the length of the belt that's used?

Re: The belt don't fit!

Maybe I can help some other users, and maybe someone can tell me where to get a 115" belt.

Autozone numbers their belts in inches, or at least that's true for our serpentine belts.

For IDI engines, they list ""11150" for NON-airconditioned. and ""11300" for a/c equipped vehicles. This corrosponds to 111.5" and 113". There is a "11450" at the top of the line ($29.95). This entire series of belts is the proper width, and has 6 ribs.

The belt that I have on the truck now is 115" and too narrow. It only has 5 ribs. It is threadbare, and there are no visible markings on it. It was in service over a year. I am hoping the Autozone 114.5" model fits, or else I have a serious problem!

YES, my truck has a (single) Leece-Neville alternator, do they have bigger pulleys than FOMOCO?

Re: The belt don't fit!

have a good part store(autzone is WORTHLESS) look it up.
our shop carquest book lists about 5 belts for our truck based opn AC and alternator, it lists the neville as an option.
belts dont stop at 114.5, any good parts stores have longer ones.............

Re: The belt don't fit!

Autozone carries the "top 100" selling parts. If it doesn't move fast, they don't stock it. Try NAPA, which carries 3 times the parts of the big box stores.

If an auto parts store can't get you a long enough belt, go to a bearing / industrial supply company. They have belts long enough to wrap around your truck.....
