Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

What is the cheapest way to connect an in bed fuel tank to the fuel system. Should I pull from the top or gravity feed? I would think that putting in a solinoid after the tank selector valve would work so I was either pulling from the main tanks or from the in bed tank. What kind of solenoid would I need and do I need an extra fuel pump or can I use the existing lift pump?

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

Check out Northern Tool. They have a kit for about 60 bucks to plumb in a bed mounted tank into your front fuel fill. Seems like the cheapest way. The bed mounted tank just fills the front tank as you pull off of it. Simple....

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

with your lift pump you should be alrighti believe. If i am correct i think that a regular fuel line coming through the bottom of the bed then following the same path would work fine as long as its on the bottom to work as a gravity feed. the pump should be strong enough to take it from there. Just becareful in the winter for "gelled" fuel, it wont be able to run back into the tank.

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

I forgot about the return line. I have not thought about that at all. I would think that I could pull off the top with a pickup tube mounted on the top plug and put the return line in that same top plug. Since the in bed tank is higher than the stock tanks it should have no problem with it.

Ok I checked out the Northern Tool Thingy and I was wondering how they keep the truck tank from overflowing? I seems to me it will keep putting fuel in there till the tank overflows.

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

Do you have a source for the 6 way fuel valve? I assume that two go to each tank one supply one return. Anyone tried the gravity feed into the filler spout?

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

I used a 3 port valve, and had a local company weld a fitting on the bottom of the tank(needed to put a hole in the bed). I use that for the fuel pickup, and I return the fuel to the top on the opposite side. A switch inside and a few wires and you are done.

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

The way I did the 119 gallon tank in The Enterprise was I picked up a 6 port switching valve from Napa then between the factory tank switching valve and the fuel pump I installed the aftermarket 6 port - then pulled the fuel from the bottom of the tank (used the drain port) but what I found was the weight of the fuel would force open the valve and it would back feed into the stock fuel system so I ended up pulling the full off the top of the top of the tank. I did this rather quick and easy in that I had the line hooked to the drain port but just routed the fuel line on the outside of the tank to the top of the tank then back down (equalized the weight of the fuel). The reason I did this was so that the extra tank acted just like a stock tank it's just that I had an extra toggle switch in the cab so that I could select between the aux tank and the stock fuel tanks. When I had the toggle switch set to OFF the stock fuel system was selected and then I could use the stock switch to select between front and rear stock tanks. I had a return line to the aux tank so that it did in fact act fully like a stock tank. By doing this I could not overfill the stock tanks because trust me I would forget once or twice and have fuel running out the fill tube, which at todays prices I don't want to waste the fuel in that manner...

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

These 6 port valves are about $100 from what I have found. Also would you just need a 4 port valve to tap into the stock line in front of the stock valve?

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

I have a question, on my maroney label (window sticker ) under options i paid $30.00 for an auxilary fuel tap. is that not what that is for? i crawled under the truck and coming from the fsv area there is a steel braided hose with a fuel type conection. it has a tag on it saying aux fuel tap. i have never seen any documentation or directions for this. (have not looked either) anyone have a clue how to use it or hook it up?
thanks fred

Re: Best way to connect an in bed tank to fuel system

nope you have to have 6 ports no matter where you put it you have main tank supply and return thats 2 ports then you have the auxillary tank supply and return thats 2 more ports and then the last 2 ports are for the main supply and return on the engine side. Clear?
