Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

Hey Guys,
Well I'm down to working the kinks out of this project and it seems that I have a huge amount of noise with the truck at idle coming from the tranny, also there seems to be some noise in 3rd and 4th. I guess from what I've read on here it's gear rollover noise. The tranny is a rebuilt "supposidly beefed up" ZF542 and I have the luk flywheel and cluch setup. I read somewhere on here about 30w motor oil. It has Amsoil Syth ATF in it now. Should I try the Amsoil 30w oil? I do not want to tear this thing up. So I'm asking you guys first.

On a side note could I have torn something up using a 6.9 flywheel on the thing. I had read some posts about maybe it would work who knew. I had a new one in a box so I tried it. Even bought the clutch with the 4 springs. It made the motor act like it had a mess and really shook the truck at idle. Needless to say it was taken out after the truck only ran prolly a min or so. I refused to tear something up trying to save a few $$..

With the new setup other than the noise it seems to be doing fine..It is easy shifting and drives really smooth the noise just agrevates the @#$* outta me!!

Thanks

These trucks, all have "noise", but it is different noises.
My noise goes away in 3rd/4th,
I live with it

Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

Ben,
I had done the Lucky mod flywheel conversion and had been experimenting with fluids and the best combination I had found was a straight 30 weight dino oil and an overfill of Lucas trans additive(3/4 of a quart) and that seemed to be about the best I had found to work. The rollover noise should only be noticable at an idle or moving along in too high of a gear at low rpm ranges. Other than that really anything over 900-1,000 rpms, the rollover noise would completely disappear.
My downfall was a trans that had a bad input shaft bearing and has 264k on the clock. With a bad choice in conversion hardware....Nylon stopnuts, I went back to a DMF due to the trans being in poor shape.
Failure on my part but not a concern for you tho.

Hope that helps a bit.

Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

So the 30w won't sheer down and loose it's viscosity. I read somewhere that that would happen being used in a tranny. It's still noisy at idle but with 22 miles on it now it no longer has any noise when in gear...Just looking for the best way to quiet it down cuz I refuse to put the DMF back in that and Taking a 4x4 tranny out isn't the funnest thing to do in the world. Bout' got it down to a science though. LOL

Thanks

Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

Another quick question... Keep the ATF in during the break in period or just swap it out to 30w to begin with.

Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

With the Lucas trans additive, I think was the key to keeping the 30W from breaking down. If the trans is under warranty, I would probably live with the rollover, not gonna hurt anything, as to not void any warranty as I don't think the reman company would warranty it. Not sure but just a thought.
Something else is to just bump up the idle a bit and that also will lessen the rollover noise as I did until I got used to it. Actually liked the noise afer a couple of days. Kinda makes these rigs sound kinda tough.
Just for example, Mel (Agnem) has the Lady Moose with the Lucky mod on that rig and at the gathering last weekend he drove by with it and I could detect the rollover noise and it did sound good.
I would say it is your choice if there is a break-in period. I would follow the reman specs then run with the 30W. There was at one point also a mention of a fix possibly a TSB at the Stealerships that addresses this same issue as others were concerned with the noise. Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

ive also just done the smf switch and have put almost 1000 miles on the truck since then. it seems that the noise has started to lessen. when i first did the conversion it was present in first, second and third gears. now i can only hear the noise in 1st gear at low rpm. this also maybe that i am just used to it or that i have changed my driving habits to avoid it. if the noise doesnt hurt the transmission could you just put more padding underneath the shifter boot? i know when i had an extra rag underneath it, it quieted the engine/wind noise down quite a bit.

Re: Best way to reduce noise with the Luk flywheel setup...

Dog Catcher thanks for bringing up the warranty. I almost forgot about it even having 12k 12 months on it. I went ahead and put 3/4 of a qt of Lucas in it on top of the Amsoil ATF and turned the idle up just a notch. That almost completely got rid of the noise. I'll try the 30w after the warranty runs out. So in a year. LOL

Thanks Lots guys
