Darrin,
What kind of flares did you use for the rear? Are they dually flares that have been cut down? What size tires are you running? Great job!
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks!
The Tires are BFG AT 315-75-17, so 35" tires.
As far as the fenders go.... They were made by Lund, and there aren't a lot of the out there. I have seen them on Rangers more that the full size trucks. There is a guy at TDS that has them on his truck and he converted it to a Dually.
I own a car lot and deal a lot with diesel pickups, so it is convient for me to buy a truck for the lot and take a few parts off it to go on my truck.
About 2 years ago there was this pimped out 88 F150 4x4 reg cab at one of the dealer auctions. It had the flares on it, front and rear. I decided that they would look cool on my truck when the time comes for the makeover. I ended up paying about $900 for the truck. took it back to the lot, removed the fenders, sort of repainted the box sides and sold the truck for $1500.00
The flares then went in the garage and sat there untill last fall when the makeover started. So a TON of parts that have gone into my truck have been aquired in this fashion.
I am truly blessed to be able to do a job that I love, and incorperate it with a hobby that I love as well! And my wife helps!

Sweet truck! Nicely done!
I couldn't tell, but is it turbo or NA? Love the stacks and the black smoke though. Sounds awesome!

It has the early Banks turbo. I know. It's a bugger to time those...
Darrin did an extremely professional rework of his rig, and as a car dealer with access to virtually any truck he wants, I applaud him for putting the time into the old beast rather than just copping out and getting something newer.

Thanks Mel, I have had a ton of nice trucks in on the lot in the last 5 years but have not been tempted to replace Big Ed at all. I guess you could say I am content.
Lets face it, Most of us here buy and drive these old IDI's because it is either what we can afford, or what we CHOOSE to afford. A lot of us if we ran into a ton of money we may go out and buy a new twin turbo 6.4. But I can honestly say that wheather I have the money or not I would not go out and replace my truck. I plan on keeping indefenatly.
Especally now!
Mel knows how I feel,...

WOOOOOOOOOW!! I love seeing these old trucks all fixed up and comstomized. I remember seeing Big Ed in its previous stage when I bought my truck off of your lot and it was still a looker then. Now, holy crap!! That is a truck to be proud of. You need to send me a parts list of what you did to Big Ed. I have been thinking about air induction through the hood but have to do some thinking with the Sidewinder turbo. I also have been thinking about sidepipes and have now decided I want them! Where did you get those pipes? I have a list of things to do to my truck. The accessories and wanted parts list just doesn't seem to stop. Heres my major plans. Lift kit, custom bumper, custom hood air intake, custom exhaust, and a big billet torque converter. Did you do anything to the tranny in your truck besides the gear vendors? What about the engine? Anyway, a truley awesome looking truck that will turn heads all over the place I am sure. Hopefully I can see it in person soon at the IDI weekend whenever that is. Hi Tom! I ran across your e-mail about a Month ago and sent you one to say HI and see how you were doing.
Your truck looks Great! You have done a lot of work. It is good to have the support of your family. I would say that you guys have about the best stable of IDI's this side of Moose Valley!
Now to anser your questions:
"Where did you get those pipes?" They are 5" Semi Stacks. You can get all of the parts and your local Semi Truck supply store. Flex Pipe, Stainless Steel Band Clamos, Elbows, Chrome elbows etc. I got the reducers from Napa. They have some of that stuff too. You can save some money if you can find a semi junk yard and pull some parts your self. I had to buy the chrome elbows new they were about $160.00 for the pair. The stacks were free from a friend.
"Did you do anything to the tranny in your truck besides the gear vendors?"
The C6 was a rebuilt unit with a shift kit. It shifts real firm, If it was in a car it would probablly chirp the tires going into second. You can hear the shift's in the vid.
"What about the engine?"
The eigine is the same one that was in the truck when I bought it. It was a used one installed while it was still in Calafiornia and I have no idea how many miles are on it. The pump is turned up, and I run propane injection, other than that it is stock.
You need to come to the IDI weekend on the 4th of july. Even if you can only come for a couple of days. Let me know and I can e-mail you the info.
Talk to you soon,
Darrin

He tends to aquire a lot of goodies like that second hand, so there is probably not a lot of hope of duplicating the source. I seem to remember JC Whitney used to sell a lot of fiberglass add-on scoops like that. Or you can spend the big bucks and get a hood from http://usbodysource.com that has one molded in already.
