Arrow Bigger Exhaust system?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if putting a bigger exhaust system on my truck will make it more efficient or give it a little more power? Basically I'm asking "what is the benefit of having a bigger (say 3" or 4") exhaust system"?

Could you please post some links to kits if any?

Thanks,

Steve

mine ran a bit better going up to a 3.5" but I also ditched the muffler at the same time.. I just used a stock setup off a superduty..

Honestly, I just got a straight throught muffler on mine and it helped my mileage.....I want to say about 1-1.5mpg. I also put synthetics in the diff's at the same time so its hard to know where the gain mostly came from....

There are some previous posts that have links to a company that makes exhaust setups for our vintage pickups. So, a short search may find what you are looking for....I hope.

"straight through muffler" .... "ditched the muffler" ......
Some of these I don't quite understand, could someone elaborate on what that means? I'm new to this stuff.

Thanks,

Steve

IIRC:
"straight through muffler": is a full flow muffler. Basiclly no restriction. you can get one from Walker, Flow Master, Magna flow etc.

"ditched the muffler" : is an exhaust with NO muffler. Can be quiet while the go pedal is worked EASY, or LOUD When you smash the pedal.

Running a 3" Walker Dynomax on my van with a turn down in front of the axle. As mentioned above it's not too loud when easy on the pedal but loud when I push it. Overall I love the sound and tone, which is no surprise as I'm a big fan of Dynomax mufflers. I've got a custom built (by me) X-pipe on my early 911 into two dynomaxs, sound more like and F1 car at full throttle than a 911 likely due to the way an X-pipe changes the tone but it's got that sweet rumble down low. On the van it's got that "I'm a truck get out of my way" sound. A full exhaust with tail pipe would quiet it even more without losing much in my opinion but I don't feel like spending the money.

I've got no mpg figures yet. Had a fuel leak two fillups ago and noticed I forgot the cap on the last fillup so some was spilled. It seems to have improved mpg though. I have no doubt it's increased power, it's much more responsive than prior to the exhaust install.

On an N/A IDI with no muffler......it will be obnoxiously, wake the dead, get pulled over by the police, kind of LOUD! Some folks like that, most think it's too much.

A turbo acts as a muffler, and the truck will not be too bad except at higher RPM and then it starts to sound like a Gasser. So a turbo'ed IDI with no muffler is not a big deal.

how much fabbing did it take to get it to fit. i have thought of going this route since there is a lot of used systems out there after they upgrade to something bigger. plus they are stainless steel.

So basically an IIRC creates less back pressure and more high end power whereas if you take the muffler off an exhaust system you get the same effect? But then you lose low end torque?
Or am I confused?

Does anyone have a specific link to an exhaust system for my truck... I have looked all over this forum and on the net and can't find anything specific for my truck.

Thanks so much,

Steve

IIRC=If I Remember Correctly

He wasnt calling that the modification. Its just silly internet jargon. Easy mistake though. There is a place that sells the exhaust for our pickups. I thought I had it saved to my Favorites but cant find it now.....I'll keep looking....

Thad

Ok here is one from Hypermax:
Hypermax - Catalog

Here is another:

Hope that was more helpful.....

Thanks Thad, so that hypermax will increase my performance slightly?
Will that adapt to a turbo system if I put one in in 2 0r 3 years?

Sorry for the confusion on the IIRC. I bought the upgraded turbo parts for my truck(sig) and picked up a "magnaflow XL" muffler P/N 13743. It is 3" in/out and if you look through it, it is a "clear shot" from the front to the rear of the muffler. I am going to fab a 3" exhaust this weekend (fri/Sat) and install the turbo upgrades. I will post pictures if you want. and I will then drive the truck to work on Sunday to see how it sounds/egt's etc.

I put on headers from Stan's Headers, standard and custom high performance header designs for automotive and marine engines. I had a local shop fab up the exhust from there , the biggest pipe they had was 3" so that is what size i orderd for the collector. I gave them mufflers , i got them from here Force Automotive - summitracing.com They are a Flowmaster type , but about 1/2 the price. The exhuste shop charged $250 and dumped them out in frount of the back passenger tire. I cant tell any real diff. between stock and the header/dual exhust. I did the exhust after i had the heads pulled for glow plugs being stuck, had the heads redone, seals , reground valves, all cyl looked good, new inj. pump, injectors , and it runs ,,,, about the same. SOUNDS really good just not much performace,,, of course my clutch is starting to slip pretty bad so i have to be easy on the power.

You got it. I will post to my gallery and then post on this thread. I am also going to powdercoat some more of the "cold side" parts of the turbo and the "intake hat". Got my stick of 3" yesterday afternoon.
