blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

Hi guys
My 1988 Ford F350 7.3 is rattling and missing badly and blowing blue gray smoke at rpms over 2000, it has new filters and lift pump. It does this on both tanks, and higher altitude makes it much worse. Fuel shows no sign of contamination. Help!!!

Re: blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

It seems to be worse at load, and going down hills. the truck has 157k on it and acts like it's starving to death....could an insufficient amount of fuel from the lift pump cause this? i replaced the mechanical with an electric pump not too long ago....

Re: blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

How far over 2000rpm, like 3200rpm+ if that is it then the governor could be cutting in and killing fuel flow to save the engine.

Is the electric is a 28gph plus pump with 5+ psi.....is it working when your driving, some members wired their pumps and they either do not work on start or not in run. IPs have the ability to pull fuel in some cases but performance is poor.

Re: blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

it starts at 2000 and gets worse up to 2800, really breaking up at that speed. the pump is a facet posi-flo, and I 've read some really bad things about that pump. I'm going to swap in another pump in the am, test my theory.

Re: blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

bubbah,
you also burn alot of veg oil. its totally possible that you killed the IP, especially since it might be original.

while you are doing that, have the inj shop pop test the injectors.... they *should* do it for free.

Re: blue gray smoke and rattling at high rpm

Shop advanced the IP, said the pump was worn but would last a while longer. I'll replace it and the injectors at home. they did fix the rattling and smoking.
