Has anybody ever made or seen a homemade belt tensioner for the 7.3 IDI alternator belt? My belt seems to be boouncing a good 1.5 inches when idling and is set to the correct tension. It's the only 1 doing it but is also the longest run out of all of them. Thanx for any input or info.

FWIW, the idler works great. I just fabricated a little bracket that held the pulley, and then welded that bracket to the bracket that bolts to the water pump that's used for adjusting the alternator tension. Sorry, no pictures here either, don't have a digital camera

There is a good chance your water pump pulley is bent adding to the bouncing of the belt. If this vehicle has ever lost the Alternator belt your water pump pulley may be bent, if during loss of this belt or soon there after the AC and or the PS belt broke too, your water pump pulley is bent. The water pump pulley should be checked and replaced if necessary.
Also use the following belt and DON'T over tighten!
Recommended Alternator Belt: Gates HD #5726

Reggie, go purchase a(short) # 17425 belt and be done with the vibrating (long) alt belts that snap and take the others with it!
I've had mine on for years...never a problem.
*Ps it goes from the water pump pulley to the alt.

Hey thanx for all the helpful info. I will definitely check into the bent shaft but if a shorter belt will remedy the problem I'm going to start with that fix first. I kind of like the idea of a little helper tensioner on that long belt though, so maybe I'll do both. Non the less pics and results will be posted. thanx again guys
