BW1356 Question

Brothers,

One of my "everything leaks" problems includes the BW1356 transfer case. I going to remove it and either "rebuild" or "overhaul" it. I struggling with weather to "rebuild" or "overhaul". I don't want to remove it and wait for parts. What do you think the risk of buying only the overhaul kit is? Besides leaks, what usally goes wrong with this part?

Rebuilder Kit - Bearings, Gaskets & Seals, Filter Kit and Pads $101.61

Overhaul Kit - Gaskets, O'Rings and Seals $27.82

Thanks,
John

Re: BW1356 Question

One member hit on an ebay guy who sell rebuilds for a reasonable price and you get to keep the old one.

Re: BW1356 Question

The weak link from what I have read is the oil pump. Do an yahoo or google search to find what others have done to keep the pump from spinning on the shaft inside the case.

Re: BW1356 Question

FC1, any idea if the pump spinning is known for causing driveline vibes at 60mph or so ??

Or does it spin in a balanced fashion... ?

thanks

There used to be a link here, to some useful IDI-diesel tech info; but it was chopped out by others, in a vain attempt to repress the very essence of the internet: linking!
sigh...

The main reason the pump gets destroyed is because some guys use gear oil instead of ATF as is required. In cold temps thick gear oil tears the oil pump off the bracket and it spins around and around instead of pumping oil.

Re: BW1356 Question

get the cheaper kit and the following

range clutch collar
range fork
pump repair kit
j.b. weld

use the jb weld to build up where the pump anti rotate tab goes and there will be no more problem with the case
the pump kit comes with a new rotate thingie <always needed>
collar and fork wear more than the chain and are almost always overlooked
