Can't hear the turbo is that normal?

I had a 2000 PS prior to this one and I could hear the turbo real well. I am not sure if this one is working without hearing it. Any way to tell for sure w/out a boost gauge? Are they all that quiet on IDI's?

If it still has the stock exhaust it will be pretty quiet.

I couldn't hear mine either until I upgraded to the 3" down pipe and larger exhuast with a open muffler. Sounds nice now.

Thanks for the information. I may go with the larger down pipe but hate to do too much as it has 338,000 miles.

All IDIs sound pretty quiet compared to different motors. I guess it's because of the restrictive exhaust/low boost. I could hardly hear the turbo on my '94, didn't really notice on my '89 but I drove it a total of probably 50 miles at most with the turbo on it.
My 2000 Jetta puts them both to shame. It whistles pretty good with stock exhaust and the engine cover and plastic belly pan replaced with an aluminum skidplate.

Send a message via AIM to 7.3L F-250
the thing is the noise of an idi is louder then that of a turbo even with my 4" exhaust

the powerstroke engines are quieter then the idis so you can hear the turbos easyer

I think its the fact that turbo idis only push about 10-15 psi boost, while strokers push over 25.

Mine has the bigger turbine housing and outlet with a 3" exhaust. I have not turned up the fuel and pulling the trailer with my foot into it on a hill @ 2600RPM I see @ 7 PSI of boost on the gauge. It was quiet when it had the stock smashed down pipe but I can clearly hear it now, not real loud but sweet none the less

Sure would like to get my stock stroker over 15.

Even with the muffler delete and SP Diesel Performance set to 80HP and hammer down, redlined, turbo screaming, black smoking to 90MPH it might have hit 17 boost,. And Oh, don't know where those Red and Blue flashing lights came from, nice Lady Cop, told her It's a Diesel, You Wouldn't Understand, just testing. Her remark was "Oh yes I do, got one too, now keep it down" Amen.

I have an ATS 088 turbo. It pushes only 11 PSI (by gauge) max. This is the design maximum; it is wastegateless. This makes good sense because the compression on these engines is high even for a diesel (though not astronomically so, and still less than my Mercedes 300SD W126 617.951) Trying to push much more boost in the IDI would require build-up and in my inexpert opinion (mostly from what I've read since buying my truck) would probably be a better idea on the thicker-walled 6.9.

Turbos make diesels QUIETER on the exhaust side, and I couldn't hear my turbo until I made a custom intake and deleted that big stupid cast aluminum box with the ATS logo on it, which had no purpose other than to cause turbulence and increase heat in the valley.
