clutch problems

I just finished rebuilding my zf-5 speed in my 1991 f-350. After putting it in, I had no clutch pedal. Bled the slave but still had problem. Decided to changed clutch, pressure plate and release bearing because when the trans let go, it smoked the clutch. After changing, I had about an inch of disengagement. I checked the travel on the slave and it was 5/16". Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: clutch problems

Your not getting all of the air out of your slave...When you bleed it...make sure and let ALL the pressure off, even if you think you heard the last of the air coming out...just go ahead and bleed alllllll of the pressure off. You loose more fluid, but it bleeds way faster.

Re: clutch problems

Although I haven't done it on the Ford ...yet. I've gone through quite a few on my Chevy's. The key is depressing the piston in the cylinder until it bottoms out then only letting it suck fluid back. As I said, don't know if this will work on the ZF, but what I'd try to do is bottom out the piston by whatever means necessary and make sure the reservior is full. I never even use the bleeder screw anymore! Also I've learned that as soon as I replace a slave, the master is sure to follow, so now I just do it in pairs. The last time went very smoothly as I marked the line as to how it was oriented in the master and slave and made up the whole assembly in my shop on the vise. I was able to bleed everything out and then install it on the truck without getting brake fluid everywhere. It washes away easily with water, by the way.

Re: clutch problems

Sorry for the late reply. I changed the slave and bled it untilI got no more air. Plenty of pedal now.
