clutch replacement

Hi everyone,
I have been a happy and proud owner of 93 F250 7.3, 5speed for more than year now. There is little over 100k on this truck, runs excellent, only that I have to replace my clutch now. Actually, clutch is fine, only releasing bearing is noisy, so I thought I should replace whole thing at once. After research I found there are 2 types of clutch (flywheels) - solid mass and dual mass. I couldn't find what is the difference though and how do I determine which one is currently on truck.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: clutch replacement

The factory one is a dual mass, and the best one is a single mass. I just did the LUK upgrade, bigger flywheel and clutch, and love it. I was also told the dual mass was more expensive to replace! I got a screamin deal from Dial-a-clutch. They are a sponsor here. I have bought two different sets from them(for different trucks) and love dealing with them.

Mike.

Re: clutch replacement

I have a fix for the dual-mass and you can keep all the big bucks in you pocket. My fix will cost under $10 and about an hour of your time. Let me know if you are interested and I will send you the procedure........... Jim

Re: clutch replacement

I can attest to Jim's DMF fix. We call it the lucky mod. How do you know your TOB is getting noisy? It could be the DMF, as it makes all kinds of bad noises when it goes.

Re: clutch replacement

Well it is knocking, but if I step on clutch there is no more knocking. I am only following advice of mechanic. What is the fix for $10?? Sounds interesting

Re: clutch replacement

There is one thing these guys leave out that could effect the price when you do the Lucky mod, if you don't have springs in your clutch you NEED to get one that does, agnem has one, but the last i had checked that wasn't in the procedure.

Re: clutch replacement

When I wrote, that my clutch plate had the springs and I thought that all DMFW came with that plate. I have since found that is not the case and have rewriten my proceedure to include that a spring loaded clutch disk is needed

Re: clutch replacement

I just got my truck back today from shop. Clutch is replaced with heavy duty solid flywheel Luk - what a difference!!! I can finally hear my engine purrrrr again... Also pedal goes down so smooooth now... I was so happy I wanted to kiss the mechanic... He showed me release bearing - what a mess. Anyway, my next step is gonna be 3 1/2" exhaust and open air filter a little... then some bigger tires, what is the biggest you can safelly fit on unlifted body??
Thank you guys for all your help. Great forum.

Re: clutch replacement

my 1991 F350 4x4 has 285/75/16's on it, with no interference during articulation; however, the front tires do come darn close to the rear edge of the wheel-well. Not sure whether F250 and/or 2wd would be the same or not. F350's are pretty tall from the factory...

Re: clutch replacement

I've got 285/75/16 on my 92 250 4x4, but i had to move the front bumper ahead an inch and a quarter and beat on the front edge of the running boards a little.

Ron, I can't get that link to work.

I just searched the archives for "+drill +flywheel" and stuff like that, but no hits other than this thread.

Anyone know where Lucky's detailed description went? Or was it banned?

thanks
