Compression test, what do I need?

I have the opportunity to do a compression test on my truck next week.

What do I need to know? I'd like to know the procedure for the test, and how to analyze my results.

I think the adapter set is snap-on. Does anyone know which adapter I need?

BTW, it is a diesel compression tester, goes up to 800 psi.

Thanks,
Brock

Re: Compression test, what do I need?

800 should be just fine, mine goes up to 1000 but it never got there. Procedure?

You can do one cicle depress, then 1 to 5 cicles depress. Allways check the reading right away. The reason I said 1 then 1-5 is you get the reading from 1 stroke and then you let it buil up but the first one not allways is the same since you dont know where the piston is at on that cylinder. Do it several times on each cylinder to make sure it is accurate, have a couple of good batteries for the test.

my 2c.

Re: Compression test, what do I need?

Okay, I suspect that I need to disconnect the fuel shut off solenoid so it won't start, and do I take out all the glow plugs first, or just one at a time?

Thanks,

Brock

Re: Compression test, what do I need?

Brock,
Yes, do remove all of the glow plugs before starting the test. You do need to remove the plug from the fuel shutoff solenoid. The FSS wire on my truck is Red w/ Light Green stripe. I don't know if the wire is similar to your year truck. Good luck, Tim
