Compression testing

Still new to working on the ford diesel. I am purchasing a compression tester and I'm guessing I need the Navistar adapter w/ the 10M x 1.0 Thread to fit the GP hole ?

Don't stone me if I'm wrong, I gotta ask someone.

Thanks

Re: Compression testing

Sounds about right to me. I am sure if the answer is wrong someone else will chime in.

We do not stone anyone here. We do swonk them though if they upgrade to a powerstroke and sell there IDI. Worse yet you will be swonked really bad if you buy a Dodge.

Re: Compression testing

Doug,
Where are you looking at them? I can't find one locally (can order one from NAPA for $104) and I've got #2 cylinder dead. Swapped out the injector for one of the old ones and still no joy. I hope I haven't dropped a valve or burned a hole in the top of the piston. Pulled the glow plug and it looks OK. Found the dead cyl. by cracking the injector fittings. Anyone in the Twin Cities area have a compression tester? I have beer...
P.S. Sorry for highjacking the thread!

Re: Compression testing

I'm looking online at some site called toolsource.com

I found lots of sites though, and a lot of 'kits' that would have all the extras but I'm shooting to get just the tester and adapter to fit my sick knocker. About $60 for the two items. Didn't find anything but the whole kit on ebay for over a 100 at best.

Toolsource has a phone number so I'm gonna call first anyhow and put the question to them just to be safe. Fist time I have been to that site so don't know squat about their customer service

Just search for diesel compression tester

Re: Compression testing

Thanks, Doug
I'll check that out. I may just bring the offending injector in and have it bench tested. On the other hand, a guy can't have too many tools...

Re: Compression testing

A simple test to check if you have a bad piston or valve is to use a rubber tipped air blower and blow air in cylinder. Need to make sure your valves are closed. If you have a bad valve you will here it in intake or exhaust, bad piston in the oil fill plug. I have used this method a alot of diesel engines. 30 years wokring on diesel engines. Could save you from buying a compression tester.

Re: Compression testing

Thanks, Doug- good idea, I'll make that my project for today. BTW, I did a little checking and I had said #2 was dead- not so, it's #1. I'll get this straight some day...

Re: Compression testing

Doug,
I won! Did as you suggested, and no leaks. Started it and pulled the oil fill cap- no blowby. Had the suspect injector bench tested today and it was OK. Hmmmm methinks, then the fella that tested it said that frequently the hole just before or after the suspect one in the firing order is the real bad guy. So for grins, I changed #7 'cause the ex. manifold was coolest around that hole (couldn't find our IR thermometer at work) and viola! Runs smooth as a babys' bottom. I'm gonna have that injector tested but I think I can predict the results... Thanks for all your help!

Re: Compression testing

If yer still interested in the compression tester...I got my diesel compression gauge from www.toolaid.com and the glow plug adapter from www.starhoffman.com. The gauge was around $35.00 and the adapter was $32.03 = $12.18 shipping. Gauge part #ADT-5560. Adapter part #TU-15-22A BajaGringo

Re: Compression testing

Thanks, Baja- I see there is a distributor in my area so I could save the shipping. Immediate need has passed, however I'm still gonna get one. Man, it's good to have ol' Shorty runnin' on all 8 again. Injector out of #7 hole was plugged solid. I wonder how an injector with ~ 5000 miles on it plugs up???
