Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
Well, I had posted a couple of months ago that I was thinking about selling my '91 to fund the purchase of something with a crew cab now that we have to have room for a car seat. Looks like I'm about ready to do that now, but I am in a bit of a dilemma.
I am getting a '99 CC dually that has 290,000 miles on it from the company I work for. Most of that mileage is on interstates and none of it in salt / snow, so it really doen't show the miles at all. Engine is good but could use an injector freshening. The problem with the truck is the current tranny. It's got a 6 speed in it that needs 3 synchros in the least, and since it's been rebuilt 5 times by dealerships I don't care much to keep it in the truck. The company always insisted on Ford clutches not LUK replacements, and poor clutch and pilot bearing design are responsible for most of the tranny rebuilds. Idiot drivers are responsible for the current lack of synchros.
Ok, getting to my point. The 6 speed in my '91 was brand spankin new about 20,000 miles ago. Not reman, new. I have no doubts about whether or not it was properly put back together after a rebuild... So, the obvious choice is to swap trannies. But, that leaves me trying to sell the '91 with no synchros. A reman is about $2000 or more, so that's not worht it for a truck I'm trying to sell. I don't really want the reman in the '99.
I still have the E4OD, driveshaft, and even stock rear end and wheels for my '91. That would make it back into a fairly normal F250 with the exception of the turbo and intercooler. Oh, and I would use the Baumannator TCS to run the tranny. It's a lot of work, but I am better able to spend time on it than cash! This might also take away some people's previously mentioned concerns of the amount of modification I've done on my truck and how that would affect resale.
So, what do y'all think? What would be the easiest (and most valuable) way to sell it???
Thanks,
Jason

Re: Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
Hmmm. That's a tough one.
Two options. Install the auto back in the old truck, and sell the bad 6 speed as a core.
Or install the bad 6 speed in the old truck (less labor) and sell the automatic with the truck or seperately. A good E4OD should be worth $900 - $1200.

When I had my tranny rebuilt at a medium/heavy truck transmission shop, they mentioned a fix for the six speed.
The problem is, in their opinion, the 13" clutch is way to heavy for either the small pilot bushing or bearing, I can't remember which the 6sp has. What they do is send the flywheel over to a machine shop where it is machined to take a much larger roller bearing, able to take the weight. It's an additional $150. I was just glad to tell them I had a 5 sp and no need for all that work!
Re: Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
I think the 91 would be more sellable with the E4OD and TCS. If you do go that way, PM me and I could send you the program variables that I've got worked out with the TCS. It takes a while to "fine tune" the program and I'm still fine tuning my downshift functions. OkieG
Re: Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
Jason, the auto trans is much more sellable to John Q Homeowner then the standard.
I might be interested in that worn out 6 speed.

Re: Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
OK, I'll post back on this.
Here's what I think.
Put the good zf6 in the newer truck. You'll save about 2k right there. Then, put a older manual tranny in the 91. You already converted it to manual. As far as the axle - it's up to you.
If you were closer, I'd trade you a good tranny and axle for your junk trans and your axle. I love what you did, and want to do it to my truck. I just don't think it'll raise the resale value of my truck when I do it.
This tranny swap will save you about $1500 total. I think it's a good investment.

Re: Which configuration would be more sellable? 6sp or auto?
If the '91 is in good to top shape every where but the tranny, then the auto would be best and charge top dollar. If the rest of the pickup is in poor condition except motor, throw the old standard in and sell as parts truck and sell auto tranny with controller seperate.
