coolant additive

The other day i had a leaking heater hose on my truck and by the time i got it replaced i lost about a gallon of antifreeze. Not that i topped the radiator off the additive mixture is probably off, I was going to just pour a little bit of additive in and call it good. Does having to much in there hurt anything? Thought i would ask before i just did it. The dealer in my area has no idea what i am talking about when i ask about the test strips so when i put it it in i went by the directions on the bottle, but have no way to test it. It can't hurt anything to have too much in there can it?

Re: coolant additive

I've heard a heavy duty truck place will have the test strips, I need some too, who knows If my truck has the additive, I didn't know anything about it until I came to this site. Hope you find some, the place that has the strips should have a volume recommmendation for you too I would think. Crexrun

Re: coolant additive

When I worked at the ford dealership, they put it in on a diesel coolant flush, but never checked it. I never knew about testing the levels till I found this site either!

Re: coolant additive

Too much is no good, reports have it will clog your cooling system. If you added a regular mix to the amount you added you are Ok. I usually have a bit of coolant left over when filling and I always add SCA to the mix so that if I hzve to add it's already to go.

Re: coolant additive

You might want to consider a premix. You can buy it by the gallon at NAPA or go to your TSC dealer and get Fleetguard. I think it's about $8.00 a gallon.

Re: coolant additive

I stopped in at the International heavy truck dealer in town and the parts guy gave me half a dozen strips for free.

Re: coolant additive

Too much DCA is just as bad as not enough. Go here to order from Fleetguard. But ONLY buy one or two of the four strip packages because they have an expiration date and you'll never use them fast enough to beat the expiration date on a bottle of 50 and the bottle size is friggin expensive .OkieGringo

6 @ $8 for premix = $48.00, 3 Gallons of low silicate is 18 + 3.00 distilled water is $21.00.
