Re: coolant ph and nitrate levels?

I'm not sure what you read but you should get some SCA (Wix brand is fine) and pour it in. This bulletin should be interesting to anyone concerned about mixing stuff.

Thanks for that link. Great info to a long debate. However, I don't think NAPA test strips work for the FW-16/VC-8 type of SCA. Only for the PennCool or NapaCool type in FleetCharge or Prestone Heavy Duty purple colored A/F. There may be other mfgs ofthe purple coloer stuff, I just haven't found out which. OkieGringo

Mostly hype yes. Just be aware that DCA-4 uses Nitrite and Molybdate. If you use this type of SCA you will need to use a test strip that checks for both because you have to add the two together to get the total SCA level.

Well, what it means to me is, I won't worry quite so much about draining the block so completely if/when I change the coolant out. If most is NapaCool type, a little of the Ford/IH type won't hurt. Test strips for the different types, test for different chemicals. I'm gonna stay with the NapaCool stuff as the test strips are much easier to get. Are you buying the 50 pack for $35+/-? I've called two NAPA's and that is all they have. I'm under the impression I'll be wasting a chunk of dough. Don't those strips expire?

If you're not getting the 50 pack, what part number are you getting?

Thanks,
Devo

Actually, I haven't bought any Napa test strips yet. I haven't had the PenCool/NapaCool type A/F in the engine long enough to worry about depleteing the sca. But I'll check at my local Napa store and let ya know. But the FleetGuard test strips DO expire, but they are usually available in packs of 4. OkieGringo

Re: coolant ph and nitrate levels?

Question. If we are testing nitrate and ph, cant we just use pool test strips. As long as we know what levels they need to be at it should be ok??? Right. Pool test strips are only like 10 for 50 at lowes. If it will work what are the right levels for ph and nitrate values.

Re: coolant ph and nitrate levels?

I don't know about pool strips but I think the best strips to use are Fleetguard 2602 and 2607 strips. You should use both kinds of strips. They can usually be purchased as singles at HD truck shops. 2602 strips test for Molybdate, Nitrite, and Freeze Protection. 2607 strips test for PH, Chloride, and Sulphate. There are probably other brands but those are easy for me to find locally.
