Can someone advise me what the whole coolant issue is. Is it corrosion eating through the cylinder sleeve or cavitation?
I bought my idi with about 96,000 kilometers. It had a small leak in the heater hose and the previous owner was just filling it back up with water . I tested the coolant with a fleetgaurd strip and it was okay but was not adequate for the climate I live in. I changed the coolant to a no name brand which I bought from my local HD Diesel shop. They said it was low silicate and not to worry about it. Just test with a fleetgaurd next oil change.
I still would like to know what the basic issue is.
Thanks

To be accurate, they're not air bubbles but vapor (steam) bubbles just like you see in a pot of boiling water. I'm pretty sure if you use something like Navistar's Compleat coolant it has the additive in it already.

Does anyone have the exact PH number required of the coolant for jHanratt?
I just got 8.0 on the PH strip with my new Turbo Power HD diesel coolant and 16oz of Motocraft SCA. I don't even know if thats in the ball park so I can't comment on whats desired...

1985 Toyota 4wd pickup, single cab, rare 2lt 2.4l turbo diesel, 5 speed, custom flatdeck, timing belt every 100,000k and shes good to go. 393,000km Excellent fuel economy!
I think Turbo Power is exactly the coolant I used. It was in a blue jug and clearly labelled low silicate on the front. On the advice of the shop I bought it from I did not use any SCA. They said it has everything the engine needs and to just use fleet guard stips with oil changes.
Should I do a fleetguard now to be safe?
Thanks
Jeff

Not Fleetguard, not any SCA's come with any guarantee, warranty and any description that say it will protect you from the rare dangers of cavitiation.
You will be never be safe.
Throw the dice, and be prepare to win or lose.

Why confuse the guy with wrong information? The correct additive does and will prevent cavitation. Different brands have been successfully used in heavy and smaller diesels for over 4 decades in an additive form or slow release filter (originally called Perry filter).

40 decades is a long time.

LMJD,
You have misunderstood my point,
If a Ford diesel has never had SCA's and after over 10 years & 96,000km, you begin treating the coolant with SCA's, the damage is done. When you purchase a used IDI, you roll the dice and take your chances.
My Ford did not have SCA's from the factory, nor was it ever recommended by Ford. I started using SCA's because it was recommeded by other diesel engine manufacturers, what was good for the goose, was good for the gander.
