Well, my old truck has picked up a strange new habit. First of all, I should say that it sat for several months with a bad transmission. It starts right up and idles/runs with no problems (no unusual smoking or lugging). The problem is that if I run the RPMs up a bit and then let off of the foot-feed kind'a sudden like, the engine will cut out and almost die before picking back up to idle. In fact, it actually did die once, but usually it will only cut out and then pick back up. Have any of ya'll heard of anything like this before? I just spent a lot of money rebuilding the tranny (for the 5th time since I've own the truck) and as much as I love this old truck, I'm really not in the mood to throw a lot more funds at it!
Have you drained/changed the fuel filter recently, use diesel fuel additive to fill the filter if you change it. Possibly there is some rust in the IP from water sitting in the IP for several months.
If you want the TSB for the stalling/water in IP, PM me your email addy.

Every time after I run my truck low on fuel it will do that. It must be sucking up crap in the bottom of the tank and gumming up the IP. Then the truck runs like crap for a while..
I turned up the idle screw a little, that helped with the engine dying.

Your metering valve is sticky in your injection pump. My cure-all for most injection related issues is to remove your fuel filter, fill it up with 100% of Stanadyne fuel conditioner. Then, overdose your tank with Stanadyne as well. I had a serious sticky advance problem in my 6.9 last winter and this cured it.

Yep classic metering valve sticking - The stanadyne or any diesel fuel lube should work for ya. Mine did this when it sat for 6 months with out running - then a couple of tanks full of treated fuel (overdosed = one bottle per 2 tanks) freed it up and it ran like a dream... I did however use Stanadyne brand but I think any fuel additive that has lube properties to it will work.

Will Work For Diesel Fuel.
Thanks guys! It's been awhile since I've changed the filter, so I will go ahead and change it out and prefill it with additive (sounds like stanadyne is the additive of choice.) I was begining to wonder about my IP, and after having just spent money on the tranny, I really didn't want to have to rebuild the IP! Thanks again!
Try the lube, you can get some more miles with that little trick. But, start saving for another pump.

So...Even if I'm able to free the metering valve with an additive, I'll still need to replace my IP? It starts/runs fine, so if I'm able to get the valve working smoothly, what else might be damaged? Just wondering how long I have before I have to throw more money at this truck (If I didn't like the old thing so much, I wouldn't!) :-)
If you get it freed up, you wouldnt necessarily have to buy a new pump. Just because your drain clogs in your sink...doesnt mean you remodel your kitchen does it?

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. I replaced the filter and filled the new one with Stanadyne before spinning it back on. I then ran 2 overdosed tanks of power service through it. The metering valve freed up and I no longer have the cutting out problem when returning to idle. Then, about 1 week after running the powerservice, the injectors began leaking fuel all over the engine..I'm talking about enough fuel to drench the engine and cause a rather large puddle of fuel on the ground under the engine. I'm not sure if the power service had anything to do with this or if it was just that the truck had sat for so long (about 10 months) and the o-rings had dried out. At any rate, I just replaced the o-rings/returns lines this evening and the problem appears to be solved. Old girl is running GREAT!!!! With 256K miles on her, just makes it even more impressive. Anyway, thanks to all of you for your help!!
