diagnosing cavitation? - heads are off
hello kind folks,
i've got an '88 7.3l in a farm truck, - lots of water in the oil, burning coolant, blow by etc
never any 'hydralock' or anything like that though
i have just taken the heads off (under a tree, in the field) and trying to figure out what is going on (my first time this deep in a motor)
the number 8 cylinder is pitted, (the rest look good) and the cooresponding channel on the intake manifold was wet and gooey (blowby?- the oil is full of water) so i am pretty sure that is the problem cylinder
the heads appear to be rebuilt ( i got the truck used) and there is a visible crack between the valves above that same cylinder
i looked as close as we could at the head gasket as it came off, and there were no obvious blow outs
i haven't seen any coolant weeping in the cylinder, but of course the hole could be on the side of the block above the current coolant level
anyone have any suggestions? i sure hate to pull the block if it was perhaps only the head gasket
i was thinking of trying to make a small plate and bolt it over the cylinder, try to charge it up with air and see what i can see
thanks!
