diameter of exhaust

Does the diameter of the exhaust make any difference how load the truck is? For example I am the proud owner of an newly installed turbo and want to try running with out the muffler. would the truck be quieter with 4" pipes rather than 3"? I would thinkthat the 3 inch pipes would be louder.

Re: diameter of exhaust

I dont think the difference will be noticeable. What would make it louder or quiter is different configurations and routes...

Re: diameter of exhaust

The bigger the pipe, the lower the tone will be. With a smaller diamater pipe the tone is a little higher pitch, and can be raspy. I have had 3.5" straight pipe and really liked the way it sounded, and changed it to 4" all the way back from the Down Pipe, and it sounds even better. It is not too loud.

If you can go with the 4" than do it. You can always cut in a straight through muffler if you want ot at a later date, but you wont want to!

Re: diameter of exhaust

I will probably do just that. I can make the exhaust so that a muffler can be bolted in when I will be pulling the travel trailer. I lik eit loud but after 4 or 5 hours of pulling it may get to be a bit much.

Right now and since I installed my turbo, I'm running a 3" straight back. Around town it's not too loud, but I can tell you that when pullin a 10k 5er up a mtn I kept waiting for the rock slide from the LOUD FRIGGIN' NOISE comin' from the tail pipe . I've just scored a free, almost new, 4" pipe with stock muffler that I'm gonna have put under there when I get paid next. OkieGringo

Re: diameter of exhaust

I am pretty sure it will be too loud for me when pulling the trailer but it must sound very nice when empty running around town. I have heard a few cummins running around without mufflers and they sound nice. Does the 7.3 sound similar?

Glass paks might be too restrictive. A diesel muffler is mighty big, might be a reason for that? You'd be better off just straight pipein' it until/if a "nice peace offier" stops ya. Straight pipes sound kinda like a big block with glass paks. OkieGringo

Re: diameter of exhaust

You must be refering to cherry bombs. Long and tube like(he he where have I heard that before) and they are a not restrictive yet but I think the insulation will pack up with soot.

Re: diameter of exhaust

I would put the glass packs in and run a dual exhaust, I think you can burn the insulation out with the exhaust or else it will fill up with soot and then you'll be good to go.
