Alright, so my ol idi's been slurpin down oil, belching blue smoke, and other little piddly stuff that's making me think its getting near the end of the line. So I got to thinkin: idi turbo. After a lil bit o pricing, I found that the 7.3 powerstroke wasn't that much more (approx $7529 v $8432) Yeah, I know they're insanely high figures for a $2k truck, but it makes for a good laugh. I know it'l need an ECM/PCM, but will it sit in my frame and/or work with the '88 instrument panel? Has anyone ever pulled off putting a 'stroker in place of an idi? Sidenote: I had an '00 F250 with the powerstroke that loved to chew up and spit out rice burners, I miss doing that.

I will probably catch some flak for saying this, but do what I am currently in the process of: put a 12 valve Cummins in there.
You could do it for $3k pretty easily, and if you spent as much as you'd have in the powerstroke swap you'd have insanely more power than you could ever imagine out of either the 7.3L IDI turbo or the 7.3L powerstroke....

I'd put in the cummins over the PSD. The old 12v cummins is still mechanical, and most had turbos from the factory. The fuel pump on those trucks have many settings other than an overall fuel screw like ours. They are very easy to modify, they have more stock tq than we do. My brother has a '92 W-350 with the cummins, wish that engine went in a better overall truck.....mine.

Yeah, I don't belive all the hype about the Cummins B, my bro has one and he just sunk nearly $2k in a front cover after a dowel pin went ballistic, and I've got a neighbor that built his B to the roof and has been rubbing it in my face (I can't wait till his pops). There's got to be a drawback to making a lil engine act like a big one. I think I'll take DeepRoots advice with the tried and true reman when the time comes.

Hey wait... why is the Promar reman so much cheaper than the Jasper Engines reman, which is so much cheaper than the Ford reman (that last one's a lil more obvious)?

Nevermind... the pic loaded, the jasper was a running complete, and the promar seems to be missing a few key components

Hey I just put in a Promar reman long block and it runs just great. Don't know what he's talking about missing parts. All the gaskets come with it, plus a new oil pumpand pickup, sure you have to use your water pump, pan, IP, injectors and intake.
Got mine for 3K and free shipping both ways. Engine comes in a pod, and you return yours in the same pod, call them and they arrange for pickup. You do have to have some way to unload and load the pod. Shipping weight is 727 I think, engine alone was 600.

Nope, and I dont want one. We run those in the yard trucks where I work. I'll admit, when they're not slinging oil or if you can get past the extreme lope at idle, they're a fine engine. Like I said, my neighbor's built his to max out the dyno. I've seen his figures, it was like 900hp before he turned it back down because he was going through clutches like candy. Personally, if it were even possible, I'd rather cram a little caterpillar in, cuz as far as I'm concerned, there's no replacement for displacement.
