You'd have to be careful with that method...it is ONLY accurate if the trans fluid is warm and has been shifted through all gears, sitting on level ground, etc.
About your engine oil dipstick- there should be a small mounting bracket tack-welded onto the tube that holds it fast against the engine block. The tube simply presses into the oil pan, and is sealed with an o-ring. It's a pain, but I'd wiggle the whole thing out of there and check for the bracket and for the o-ring.
