DRW Air in tires

So I have a 94 7.3IDI turbo...love it. I feel silly asking this but since this is my first dually I have run into a very minor issue that has me a little confused. So here it is....how does one get air in the rear tires? Do I need to pull them apart since the valves are inbetween the tires? I was a little puzzled by this and thought there must be an easier way to add air other than taking a tire off...but I have been wrong many times in the past!

A little insight would be most appreciated!

Thanks!
Chris

Re: DRW Air in tires

On my 94 I have mags, so the opening is a little wider than stock steel wheels, I can just get my air inflator in (skinned a few knuckles)and read the guage. Run up I 35 to camper world and you can get a dually air kit, it has a extender for the inner wheel that clips on to the outer steel wheel.

Re: DRW Air in tires

some duallies ( apparently not yours) have a long valve stem that comes through the rim of the outer tire.

or some air stations have the filler that is double ended so you can fill the tire by pushing or pulling and the air filler. that way you can reach through the outer rim

or did you check to se if the valv stem is facing in ward toward the middle of the truck?

just my $.02

Re: DRW Air in tires

Chris, I feel your pain- been there, done that. No, I don't split the wheels. You have a couple of options. I have found I can remove the valve stem cap of the inside tire using a 1/4" drive socket (I believe a 5/16") on an extension, simply friction-fit over the cap, then fill using a long air chuck (as well as a long tire guage).
The other option is to install valve stem extensions (available at truck shops) which extends them through the outside wheel, making them easily accessible. I have some reservations about how this would affect the tire balance however. Have fun!

Re: DRW Air in tires

Thanks all! I appreciate the quick input. I had never actually considered the task untill I had an air hose in my hand trying to figure out how to get air in the tires. I do have the valve stems facing inward. I think I may check out the extended valve stems...I just moved to Florida and there seems to be a preponderance of RV dealers so I should be in good shape!

Thanks again!

Re: DRW Air in tires

No need for extentions, all you need is a "dual foot air chuck". They have them at Wal Mart and most auto parts stores. They have tire gauges in the same configuration.

Re: DRW Air in tires

Also helps if you have the valve stems on the inner tire changed to the metal ones. They will not bend when pushing the chuck over them

Re: DRW Air in tires

You need an air chuck that looks like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/AIR-DUAL-TIRE-CHUCK-...tem260087802533
Make sure you get one that the forward fiting is straight like the one pictured and not angled because if you have a metal stem that faces outward on the inner dual, the angled head won't go onto it.
