E40d converter locking in & out way too much

My transmission is driving me crazy. It will lock and unlock at random making the engine rev high then low then high again then low again. I even tried driving it with the OD off to see if it would stop but it doesnt help at all.
What can be going on with it?
The fipl is set at spec. I just checked it today and the transmission isnt running hot or anything else like that.
The shifting seems soft also. I feel like 4th gear comes way too early, I see 4th at 45mph or close to it. It seems to shift much better if I really stand on it. Even then it shifts a little bit early and then lugs the motor a bit causing extra black smoke.
I have been driving around pushing the OD off in town and letting it back on when I get on the interstate.

Sorry for another E40d post.

Thanks again, Eric

Is your od light blinking? Try changing your oil and filter. Check your electrical conections too. It doesn't sound good.

Re: E40d converter locking in & out way too much

I just changed the fluid and filter 2 months ago and have driven only about 4xxx miles tops since then.

My overdrive light is not flashing at all.

The fluid doesnt smell burnt and has not been hotter than 195 since I changed it. The 190 was towing my jeep 2 weeks ago up a slow steapy hill in Kentucky and it climbed slowly back down to about 180 after that.

My light did flash in Kentucky now that I think about it. I reset my fipl and it hasnt come back on since then.

What else can I do?
Thanks, Eric
