E40D Transmission Controler

I have a newly rebuilt E40D and was told you could buy a transmission controler of some type to up the line pressure for firmer shifts and prolong the ife of trans. If any one has one or knows what the best ones are let me know.

This is adjustable with 4 settings.

Okie has a procedure to increase the basic line pressure.

Re: E40D Transmission Controler

Electronic Pressure Controler

Line pressure on the E4OD is critical and too much will quickly destroy it.
There is a "main line tap" in which you can hook up a gauge. The "tap" is on the driver's side, forward of the MLPS by about 4 inches.
Gear Range-------- at Idle Hot-----------at Stall Hot
-----------------------------------------------------
Park&Neutral--------55-70 PSI--------------N/A-------
-----------------------------------------------------
Reverse-------------75-130 PSI-----------240-265 PSI
-----------------------------------------------------
Drive---------------55-70 PSI------------156-174 PSI
-----------------------------------------------------
2nd-----------------55-70 PSI------------156-174 PSI
-----------------------------------------------------
1st----------------75-99 PSI------------157-186 PSI

IMPORTANT
If you suspect a line pressure problem, make sure you hook up a gauge and check line pressure.
Once you've verified line rise, you know that the TPS/FIPL, EPC Solenoid, controller, and all wires and connections between them are good. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes to do but can save hours of diagnostic time.

NOTE
On early model controllers, once this transmission shifts to 3rd gear and the LU clutch applies, line pressure will cut back to base line and you will not get line rise unless you go to passing gear. This is a normal condition.

Remove the trans. pan and look at underside of the solenoid pack. You'll see a solenoid with either a socket head screw or a torx screw protruding from the bottom. Clockwise increases line pressure and counterclockwise decreases line pressure. Be very cautious with this adjustment. No more than 1/8 of a turn. There is a pressure tap on the left (driver's) side of the transmission. This is not a bolt but rather a plug. This same plug may also be replaced with a sensor for a trans. temp. gauge
--mlps--manual lever position sensor--on left side of trans--shift lever goes through this sensor switch......

Re: E40D Transmission Controler

I have a couple of the Banks Transcommander that Banks supplies with their Sidewinder Turbo upgrade for the E40D. One is specifically for the pre 95 E40d (unused), other is for the later model after 95,(used 3 months on my E40d), it will work on pre 95's as well. I installed it and found out later it was specifically for the later models. Called banks on the issue and was told, no problem just a slight difference in resistance in the unit. I removed it when I upgraded to an ATS HD Built E40D and Billet triple disk torque converter (converter is now controlled by its own controller by ATS)14 months ago.

However I wish I had known about the Banks Transcommander 5yrs prior to upgrading the tranny. I believe it would have saved me the ungrade.
I had the truck in for a tranny oil change, and the tech showed me the material and fillings in the pan and said I was headed for a rebuild. I had replaced this tranny and stock converter 6 yrs prior with a Ford rebuild, shortly after I purchased the truck in 98.

Everything was working Ok, but fiqured I needed a more bullet proof tranny & torque converter, to start pulling a 10,000 lb 5th'r.
The stock converter is your biggest problem area, the Banks Commander will change the performance of the tranny considerably. Higher line pressures and firmer shifts. I was very satisfied with it, but installed it to late on my tranny at the time. ATS would not warranty their tranny with it installed, wanted theirs instead, besides now I can dial in the speed that I want the converter to engage(dash mounted unit, cool).

Give me an email if your interested in purchase around $180 for used one, or $200 for unused one. Will be going on Ebay in a couple weeks. RGDani4042@aol.com
