Is there any difference between diesel and gasser E4OD's? I'm getting a diesel and wondering if the good transmission from my rusty old gasser is worth saving as a spare.

There are a lot of internal differences, too. The diesel trans is a lot stronger than the gasser trans. You are correct that the bellhousing pattern is different, and it is not a removeable bellhousing.
