E4OD Harsh 3-4 shift/ Torque Convertor Lockup

Hi All,

I have been doing alot of serching and am not sure if any of the threads that I found directly apply to my truck. It is actually a '94 E 350 U-Haul.

It has the 7.3 IDI and the E4OD. I will be checking the RPM sensor and the FIPL sensor as others have suggested.

My problem is that the transmision shifts O.K from 1-2 and 2-3. Then the TC locks up in 3rd, unlocks shifts to 4th, and "WHAM" the TC locks up at about the same time that it shifts from 3-4. It seems to shift early if I am under light acceleration. (In OD with the TC locked up by 35 MPH ) If I am under moderate to heavy acceleration, it seems to shift ok and less of a harsh/slam lockup of the TC. The 1-2 and 2-3 shifts seem OK.

I also have no flashing of the OD off light which I am told will indicate problems with the control circuit.

I have also recently drained and refilled the transmission and changed the filter. (Yes the filter is the correct one for this truck. It takes the 4x4/deep pan filter) I did not drain the torque convertor. I have verified that the transmission fluid is serviced to the proper level.

I did find a good bit of ferrous particals and sludge attached to the magnet when I took the pan off. (About a handfull)

Any suggestions?

Does the speedo work OK no fluctuations..... No tach in Eseries. Do the FIPL and see what happens..... A handfull of stuff is a good amount, but it was Uhaul. Is there an OEM tag on the trans still.

There are no cut and dry answers.....

Check and set the FIPL sensor first, then if the problem is not corrected change out your tach and VSS sensors.

Re: E4OD Harsh 3-4 shift/ Torque Convertor Lockup

The speedo acts like it is cable driven sometimes (which I know it is not), so you may have somthing there, that the VSS may be erratic. It has never fluctuated more than 1-2 MPH though. But the other shifts are nice and smooth

The trans appears to have been replaced at some point. I got the maintenance records for the past two years when I bought it. No mention was made in that time about a trans. replacement. It looks to be a Ford reman. trans. At least that is what the sticker says (Ford Quality Remanufactured)

It appears that U-Haul gets all of their replacement parts from Ford
