i have been having a bit of an issue. When I do a gradual take off it shifts ok. It is firm but shifts at a normal rpm. When I put my foot on it about half throttle, it shifts pretty high. Usually around 2500 or so. I checked the FIPL and it is within range(.998 closed throttle and 3.89 WOT).. Anyone got any ideas. It is really throwing off the powerband.

It could still be the FIPL. It's basically a variable resistor, and it may not be giving a proper reading at mid-range. Do your same test, but move the accelerator linkage slowly open and closed and back again, and watch for a smooth, consistant change in voltage. It's best to do this with an analog (needle) voltmeter as the cheaper digital meters average the voltage and will not catch quick voltage changes.

i did a sweep with my digital and pretty smooth. I switcked it out to be sure it wasn't that just in case. should the idle be .997 to 1.10 and wot be 3.8 to 4.3 and is the lower the voltge the lower the rpm shift point. thanks

no it is not blinking and yes it does work. I replaced the fipl switch only because I already had another new one. It was a two for one deal when I bought the last one. trust me I am cheap and wouldn't go out and buy one just for the sake of seeing if it worked. I sensed the what is he thinking in your typing....lol

when I adjust the FIPL, do I want the voltage higher or lower if I want earlier shifts. Right now it is at .998 volts at idle and 3.78 for wot. It is just shifting to high. At gradual speed increases it shifts at 2300 and at foot on the pedal it is close to 2800. Thanks.

Shoot for as close to 1.1vdc as you can get with a good digital DVM, I can't remember, I believe the top range not to exceed is 4.2-4.3@WOT, not somewhere where i can check my notes for the upper voltage limit not to exceed, you can tell your shifts get snappier as you adjust up.

Mr. Roboto, thanks for the info. I have noticed that in the last 3 months or so it has been shifting kinda hard like that. I put a bully dog shift enhancer just over a year ago. does this do the same thing as the pressure riser or do I need that too.

The Bully Dog probably does the same or similar thing. Several manufacturers make similar products for electronic transmissions to increase line pressure.

Ok. So now that I have done all that the reasonable man can do, Does anyone know what pressure the pump should be producing. I am going to see about putting a pressure guage to check it. If I remember right, the port is on the driver side around the shift linkage area. Is this the same port that you can install a temp sender? Also, do anyone have any other suggestions why it is shifting so high. And why do it not feel like all the power is getting to the wheels. The tranny was rebuilt a few years ago and really never felt like all the power was getting there. I am not quite desperate yet, but getting there. Thanks again.

CAUTION: Perform line pressure test prior to performing stall speed test. If line pressure is low at stall, do not perform stall speed test or further damage will occur. DO NOT MAINTAIN WIDE OPEN THROTTLE in any gear range FOR MORE THAN FIVE (5) SECONDS.
I copied exactly. But I think it should say: If line pressure is low at idle, do not perform stall speed test. Good luck, Tim
I just bought myself a SUPERIOR E4OD ADJUSTABLE PRESSURE RISER 1989-1993 to my truck on http://www.oregonperformancetransmission...egory_Code=E4O D after having some of the same problem described over here. Funny thing is that I tryed to bye this item a couple of mounth ago but they just shipped to, yes you guessed it, US of A and Canada. So I dropped them a mail complaining on just that and the fact that I'm living in Norway and really REALLY needed it and guess what... (I'm sure you guessed this one too.... ) They are sending to the whole world now (not B-coz of me, I know, but still...)! Lucky me and lucky my truck, coz in under a week I have this pressure riser... jippiii...

So I guess it helps sending mails, even if I come from a far out place like Norway.... up in the farmost corner of the world.

... and to all you guys, thanks! I haven't come over one problem you guys couldn't fix, I had had some problems, but it is all here on the TDS, written down to help me and others and if not I just ask. So thanks a lot guys, you ARE the best!
