E4OD making noise need some help

I have a 92 2WD with a E4OD. It is making a growling noise when not on the throttle. The trans shifts pretty good, and the fluid smells and looks good. This noise is really bad when Im pulling a trailer at 65mph+. I did notice the speedometer moves around slightly at highway speeds. Could this be causing it? If so where do I get a sensor and where is it located?
Thanks in advance.

Re: E4OD making noise need some help

Are you sure the noise is coming from the transmission, and not the rear? Those sensors should be available from any parts store. Tim

Re: E4OD making noise need some help

I doubt its the speed sensor, but you could try it. Does the noise change with speed or rpm? Have you changed the fluid and filter lately? Does your od light blink, try pulling the codes? Does it do it stopped with the truck running in gear or not? Give us some more info on when it does it and what it sounds like. Does it vibrate the truck? When going down the road over 50 mph holding the trottle steady and maintaining speed push the 4-way button, do you get a raise in rpms?

Re: E4OD making noise need some help

Considering it's only doing it when it's coasting, and it's worse when coasting with weight, I'm thinking that one of the "one-way clutches" is bad.

Maybe someone with more knowledge of the internals can tell me if I'm full of crap or not.

I missed that, that answers most of my questions.

Re: E4OD making noise need some help

I would run the noise by a good trans shop, they will probably know exactly what it is.

And yes, I think you should start saving up for a rebuild.
