I have a 1991 idi non turbo engine out of the truck, the heads where replaiced a few years ago by my friend that i bought it from. I pulled the pan and the pistons, and the cylinder walls look great. I was wondering what I could do for some more performance while I had it out. I was looking at a new injector pump, and injectors. Any recomendations. I was also wondering what the hp was for this engine, and what I could get out of it without putting a turbo on. thanks in advance.

There's not much you can do that will give you across-the-board power gains without going to forced induction, but nitrous is something to consider. Making power is all about burning more fuel, which requires more oxygen. Air is about 20% oxygen, nitrous is 36%. If you need a temporary power boost while climbing a hill or maybe while merging onto I-40 or I-44 while pulling a trailer, nitrous will do it. These engines don't have 6 head bolts around each cylinder like most diesels do (they have 5) so you are limited to some degree on how much fuel you can burn, but I have no doubt 300HP is doable without affecting reliability (stock is ~185.)
Why did you pull the engine?

I have a torque cam that I get from my cam grinder that makes more low end. PM if interested.

I pulled the engine out of a truck i wreaked 2 years ago. the one that was in my 91 had a ats turbo and i loved it, bit when money is tight you do what you have to. so now im back to putting the old beater back togeather.

i was wondering about the oil pump, do they go out very often. I know that they are expensive, but its easy to do while its out. I also have a new question. i found a 92 4x4 for 500, he said that the tranny was out. I was wondering if a 2 wd zf5 could be adapted to work for a 4x4.

No, by design compared to a gas engine diesel oil pump gears hardly ever need replacement. Any diesel of any brand I've ever overhauled I've always "gone by the book" and checked pump gear lash, etc, and never found out of spec wear. Their life span is like cam bearings, even longer.

Without digging out my valve cover decal (it's in with my ATS info) if I recall correctly the sea level engine was 185 HP and the high altitude version was 165 HP.
