Engine rebuild kit for '94 7.3 idi turbo?

Hey guys, my truck threw what sounds like a rod bearing last week and I've looked and looked for a rebuild kit but no luck. Every kit I find say's (except for 93-94 turbo.) Need to get going soon so any information on rebuilding it would be appreciated. Thanks

welcome to the Diesel Stop

Biggest difference in the N/A and Turbo 7.3 IDI is the exhaust valves when it comes to parts for a rebuild. Other than that you can use the bearings and such for any 7.3 IDI.

When it comes to rings, the factory turbo IDI's have keystone rings and pre turbo engines don't. That's possibly the only difference that comes to mind in a rebuild kit. Wrist pins are bigger but pistons aren't part of a kit.

I'll have to remember that tidbit about the rings.

Since Mahle makes pistons for diesel engines. Might want to talk to them:

As far as we can remember. Don't take everything on an internet forum as the absolute gospel truth. After you decide what parts house you're going to buy from, the smart plan of attack would be to show the parts man your list of parts, then compare to see which turbo engine parts had a different part number versus non-turbo. In other words a rings set for both engines are going to have different numbers.

Good advice. Also don't order any rings/pistons or bearings until the engine is torn down and precise measurements taken, ie cylinder taper, journal diameter, etc. You may find the pistons are okay and only need rings.

As Chuckster just posted (good advice again) I sure wouldn't order spendy pistons unless you check yours out first. By reading your first post, yours may be OK. Plus you don't know if you have standard or oversize bore.

Yea, I will definitely tear the engine down and before I order anything. But since this is my first diesel and I've only rebuilt 350's and 305's in the past I wanted to learn more about it before I started on it.
