I recently took my truck on a long run (for me that is) and the temp gauge they usually runs on the low side of the dash gauge (just below the N on normal) now barely registers.
I pulled into the driveway leaving the engine running, popped the hood and used my thermal heat gun to check the upper radiator hose temp.
It was at 140 degrees.
I do know the cooling system is greatly over sized but do not think that 140 degrees close enough for the water coming out of the upper radiator hose.
Is the standard engine temp on these IDI Diesels supposed to be 180ish or not?
I thought I replaced the thermostat a couple years ago with the factory normal temp range and would just replace it, but it was not a simple 5 minute swap.
I have an aftermarket gauge and the sending unit is in the D/S head between #6 & 8 and it reads @ 195 unloaded. your thermo might be stuck open, you may have a foriegn object lodged it it. Your post says you used the FORD/IH thermo right?

It was the stock replacement from a local auto parts dealer.
It's getting colder out and I need to decide what needs to be done before the temps drop hard and the snow starts falling.
So this weekend I am changing the oil and I guess the thermostat as well.
It should help the crap heater as well because it's losing a lot of air somewhere before it gets to the dash vents, and I'm unwilling to tear it apart right now.

Verified 19 mpg city taking off slow as hell the shutting down at red lights, and with the radiator grill blocked flush, no bed cover, "drag shoot" mirrors on I get 24 mpg at 50 to 55 mph on the freeway empty!
However, with a bed cover, no mirrors and Hydroxy

Never ask "What else can go wrong?" cause something will.
Search the IDI forum for P/N...IH/FORD thermo must be used...
That might be my issue current issue and from day one it seemed to be running on the cool side, even with the grill blocked off.

Diesel engine coolant temperature at the top of the radiator where hose attaches after high rpm or under load condition for 20 minutes should be (195-237*F) 91-114*C nice time to have a temperature reading point and shoot tool.
