I was curious what is involved with swapping a 7.3 IDI with a zf 5spd into an 83 f350 that has a 460 in it. some Ahole backed into my 91 yesterday and took off while I was inside Napa. I can pick up this 83 f350 4x4 complete with bad engine for $1,000 and its in pretty decent condition, just not sure whats involved with the swap and the wiring. Thanks
The entire drivetrain, associated wiring, fuel system has to be brought over. If the 460 had an auto trans, then you need to install clutch components.

How much of the wiring do I need? Swap the tanks between the two trucks and what else? Sorry about the questions. I would do a search but I'm running short on time. Thanks
The dash from my 91 should swap right into the 83 correct? If so then I could also swap the cab/engine wiring harness over too? In your opinion what would be the best and or quickest way to do this swap? It's my DD and I need it back fast because in the mean time I'll be driving my non street legal offroad rig.
I am not sure what year the body styles changed, so I can't say for sure if your dash will move over. FWIW, I have managed to avoid these kinds of swaps for the duration on my career, so I only know what I have read on these types of forums. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I thought the cabs were the same from 80-97. And that they just changed the styles of the dash. I could be wrong hopefully someone else will chime in soon and give some more insight on this. thanks for your input chuckster!
BUMP. I now have both trucks and have gotten the older truck cleaned up and ready to swap. can anybody tell me what I will need to do / swap to put my diesel in this truck? thanks
