I have a 1988 7.3, and it sat around for about 3 months. I started it back up, and now it runs very rough, and puts out plumes of thick white smoke, even after it's warmed up, and even after I've put in some fuel system cleaner/water remover (I suspected water, but this stuff isn't helping at all).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Skyler
I would be inclined to look at fluid level in the radiator.

I'm new and also don't know squat about trucks, however I think you are saying that white smoke usually means radiator fluid is getting to the engine, and the way that usually happens is via a blown head gasket - is that correct?

No, Maybe,
If you are losing radiator fluid, and it is a GOOD DAY, than it MAY a head gasket, if it is a BAD DAY...., a real BAD DAY, than it the big C.
But lets not go in that direction. Not yet.

I would replace the fuel filter. While doing this, I would get a pint or two of Fred's hair tonic (Power Service, Stanadyne) and fill the fuel filter with it before you install it. Fire it up and cross your fingers. With hope, it will fix your problem. I'm thinking a bad or filthy injector or two. You haven't moved the injection pump, have you? Tim
bad IP pump will also do what you are stating. when the oring wear out, it will smoke like a bad dog. seen it more times than not. sniff the smoke while its running, dont inhale to deeply. if it smells like diesel, well thats an easier fix. if it smells like a case of burnt cookies, and makes you want to run and hurl, it coolant. thats the best way to describe it..
