firewall flange and boost

What a day.

Well it's in-Hypermax system. What a wonderful way to get to really know your truck!!

Anyway, I took it on a drive and found that there as still a wierd vibration/drumming. Any ideas on how to bend this flange more when it's all together? I know it's hitting right where the driver's side up-pipe comes into the mount. Please...don't really want to take apart, but if I have to....

Second, on our short drive, all in the city (nothing over 30mph) I noticed that I wasn't getting anything on the boost guage. Couple of questions here...
1. How tight should the boost hose be from the intake hat? I'll check for leaks on the hoses and clamps.
2. I have not messed with the fuel yet. Earlier, I turned it up 2 flats. Should I go further? I got about 600 on the pyro.
3. Help. I really need to get this project wrapped up. My wife is starting to question who (what) is really important!!

Thank for you help. I look forward to what others have done in this situation.

Re: firewall flange and boost

I installed a Banks Wastegated turbo on my 93 dually last fall. When you're not pulling a load and not heavily accelerating you won't see much show up on the boost gauge at all. At 30 mph I would say it's very normal not to see any. As far as the fuel screw goes, you may want to hold up adjusting any further until you get it out on the highway on a hill pulling a good size load...then you will know. 600 F around town at 30 mph without pulling a load seems a bit hot to me. With my banks and an empty truck my EGR runs at about 450 F while cruising on the highway at 63 mph at 2250 rpm. When I was pulling my 7500 lb trailer last week my temps were around 800 F when I was pulling the load 63 mph on gently rolling hills.

Re: firewall flange and boost

When I put my Banks in I worked on the firewall for 3 nights until I got the clearance right. My downpipe was contacting the firewall about 1/2 way up-at the bend. I ended up using a tire spoon and a 6 lb hammer to "persuade" the firewall into a quieter configuration. The tire spoon had just the right bend to make it between the pipe and firewall. Now it actually runs quieter than before the turbo.

Re: firewall flange and boost

Thanks guys. It's getting better. I now have an assortment of bars to use. It's almost there, just a little more. I'll work on that tonight also.

I did have a chance to get it on the freeway today. Saw boost up around 5 on the Sunset Hill-70 mph and about 1900 rpm. I'll leave the fuel where it's at until I have a chance to haul/tow something of significant weight.

However, on this drive I also noticed I have an exhaust leak. Not good as I had my exhaust done up this a.m. I'll take the up pipes off tonight and re do them. Do I need to use anti seize on these? It'll work itself out. Wife is getting very tired of me spending all waking hours working on SuperTruck (son's name for it!).

Thanks for your help. Any ideas on the exhaust?

John

Re: firewall flange and boost

Well this is what I found out upon further inspection.
Exhaust leak was from pyro fitting in passenger side primary pipe, easy fix.

Firewall did need further persuasion. Driver's side primary was rubbing on one of the screws from the transmission hump. Took out the screw and it's gone. I did have to remove the driver's side pipe to also "persuade" some of the flange further out of the way. I don't want to go back and do this again.

So far so good.. Thanks for the help guys.

John
