i think that pretty much sums it up. i'd fill the filter w/ Howes or Stanadyne or PS, myself...

some purge the air via the schraeder valve afterwards, but you can also just let it purge by cranking if you think your batts & starter are up to it. you can kill your starter with 30 sec+ cranks. good batts are essential to starting these old girls (especially in cold weather),so don't kill them while you're at it.

do you know how to jump your starter while under the hood?

Re: fuel filter

Best to drain some fuel off before removing, use the drain wheel on the bottom. Drain fuel into a small container under the drain line. Disconnect the electrical connector for the water in fuel sender and drain line. Now unscrew the complete filter with the base attached, filter wrench may be needed. Drain the rest of the filter, remove the base from the filter.

Clean then screw the base on the new filter using new Oring (lubricated) hand tight. Fill new filter 3/4 with new diesel fuel or approved fuel additive, lubricate filter seal and screw on to filter header. I use a filter wrench for 1/2-1 extra turn. Attach WIF sender wire and drain line, now your done. Any leaks tighten as required.

If you use fuel to refill the filter always use the outer small holes, that is the unfiltered fuel area. Never drain old fuel from the old filter into the new one.

Re: fuel filter

When I changed mine, I couldn't get it to start. So I pulled it off again and filled it with ATF. Reinstalled and she fired right off. Chased all the mosquitoes out of the neighborhood too.

Re: fuel filter

I've had good luck cleaning the bowl, threads, and all valves with brake cleaner or gumout and then pouring just a little motor oil in the bowl and then spreading a film of oil over the bowl interior, threads, and both O-rings. I fill the filter with fuel and reinstall.
Changing a fuel filter often times disturbs a tight seal and causes air to get into the fuel system. Taking a few minutes to cover all the bases has been time well spent for me.

Re: fuel filter

Have faith, just like an oil filter kinda, just take it off and all will become clear to you. Just unhook the wire on the bottom, and unscrew the filter....

Re: fuel filter

the valve is up on top of the filter housing and looks like a tire stem (Schrader valve). the bowl is the bottom piece of the filter. If you unscrew the largest part (the filter) it will have a bottom piece that you will need to unscrew also. if you look at the new filter it should become apperent where you need to put evertything.
