fuel pedal for cold start

I finished the new injector pump. Once I got it started, I could immediately tell it was a whole different animal! I haven't been able to test drive it yet, but I'm looking forward to the drive. Anyway, once warmed up, it will kick right over with barely a turn of the key. After sitting overnight however, it took more cranking. Poking around, I realized that the clear line I put in to track air leaks was allowing air to enter the system. Ironic, huh? So tomorrow, I cold start again. My question is ....What do you folks do in regards to the fuel pedal when cold starting? Push it down and relase? Push it down and hold it? Pump it while cranking? It used to kick over for me without touching the gas, but I'm not sure now with the new pump. Thanks for all the help folks. I love this site!

p.s. Next stop Holley Red electric fuel pump!

Re: fuel pedal for cold start

Normally just tapping the pedal after the key is on to get it on the fast idle cam is all you need. As it gets colder some times a little to a lot is needed.

Re: fuel pedal for cold start

Instructions for starting on sunvisor say 1/2 throttle for starting above freezing, full throttle for starting below freezing.

My observation has been mine is just fine if I cycle the glowplugs twice with a 10 second wait between cycles (let plugs cool off, transfer heat to combustion chamber), then just press and release to set fast idle and crank. It fires after less than 2 revolutions with 2 cycles of the GPs. Yours may or may not need 2 GP cycles, mine has to crank for 3 or 4 seconds to start with only 1 GP cycle, and glow plugs are cheaper than starters...
