Fuel pressure

Hi All. 2 questions.
What should the fuel pressure be at the filter test port with the engine running?
Out of nowhere my engine started surging at idle, no leaks, timing right, fuel pressure at 3 psi running, at the filter. Too low?.thanks

Re: Fuel pressure

It should be 5 to 7 lbs running.

Re: Fuel pressure

pressure too low..starving for fuel

your lift pump could be going out.

Re: Fuel pressure

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.

If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

Re: Fuel pressure

I'm running an electric pump, When running, and I pinch off the return at the filter, pressure goes up to 6 psi and the engine runs only slightly better. The fuel pressure has allways been around 3 psi. I found a referance to pressure elsewhere in this forum that says 1-2 psi at the shrader valve. so I,m a bit confused. I suppose I should be a little more clear as to how it runs. There are no issues off idle and hi speed. it will idle smooth for a few seconds the it will jump a few hundred rpms for a split second then go down again for a few more. this is not a rythemic type of action. sometimes it will stay at the higher speed for several seconds then drop down to idle again. I read about a slipring in the govorner that breaks up but found no black particals inside. Could I simply be having govorner problems with the ip now

Re: Fuel pressure

Remember that the return to #1 injector and the inlet to the IP are free flowing all the time.... the IP rally only needs 2 psi to work correctly. The extra pressure and flow are used for cooling the IP. Your rythmic surge could be air in the system..
