fuel shutoff solenoid

Can anyone tell me how to test a fuel shutoff solenoid? I did this couple of years ago but my memory has a hole in it. Truck fired up, ran for a couple of secs then died. No smoke from tailpipe now. Replaced waterpump yesterday and was running A-1 prior to that. Batteries are fully charged and turning starter fine....lots of fuel in tank.

Im not certain on how to check the fss. But its sounds more like you have a air leak causing a fuel drain back issue.

You're right. If trucks sits for more than a day it loses system pressure and cranks a couple more times to re-deliver fuel to IP. Now it won't start at all which makes me think FSS could be to blame.

Dosen't really sound like the FSS, but to test it you can just turn on your key with the engine off and pull the connector, each time you touch the wire to the spade you should hear a good click.

Has it ran since you did the waterpump? You must use different bolts with the newer style water pumps. The design change in the housing requires shorter bolts- the longer original bolts will interfere with the pump gear causing the injector pump to seize.

sure enough, fss was the culprit. installed new solenoid and purrs like a big rattling kitten. now to find out where and why i'm losing fuel pressure when its shutdown. thanks guys

There is no residual fuel pressure when shut down..... the fuel system it an open curcuit.
Sucks fuel from the tank, pushes through the IP (which removes what it needs) and returns it to the tank.
