Have an interesting problem. Start my truck in the morning, runs for a few seconds then dies. Have to crank about 30 seconds then she starts to catch and then starts and runs fine all day, starting & stopping. Same thing next moring. Changed the gas pump, fuel filter, & checked the fuel lines for leaks. My driveway is on a slight incline last night I backed the truck up instead of pulling in. This morning the truck did not die. Any thoughts.

You have air entering the fuel system, which allows a drain back situation. It empties part of the filter and lines, the IP has sifficient to start but runs out of fuel. When you crank it the fuel system is filled up and it starts. With the nose down there is positive fuel pressure on the air intrusion point and it does not leak air into the system......

it sounds like you have covered the simple stuff pretty well. It sounds like it could be a symptom of an injection pump bleeding off when it sits all night. The pump body is supposed to stay full when it is sitting all night, but when the valving gets bad, it allows the pump body to bleed off and when you start it the next day, there is not enough fuel in the pump to keep it running. Once the lift pump fills the body back up, it's all good. When you backed your truck in to your drive, you put the fuel tank at a higher point relative to the pump and made it harder for the pump to drain. What lift pump did you get? I have seen brand new cheap lift pumps be junk right out of the box. Use one from International, they are better built than most. Have someone crank it in the morning, while you hold in the little schrader valve and you should get strong clear spurts of fuel. If they are dribbles and/or full of air, the lift pump is probably bleeding off. Another issue may be failed valving in the IP. An easy way to check would be to leave it sit on a level place or park normal in your driveway. Before starting it, remove the screws and cover on top of your IP where the solenoids are at. (you may want to try to line up a gasket in case the original gets damaged.. I can't remember if it's a gasket or a rubber seal..haven't done one for awhile.). MAKE SURE IT'S CLEAN AROUND THE PUMP. The fuel level should be right to the top of the pump body. If it is down more than 1/16 - 1/8", it's bleeding off and needs an IP. Good luck.

Whoa....hold on there pardners, if you are not aware of the Governor cover removal and correct installation proceedures you can destroy your engine by having it runaway on you. Inproper positioning of the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid jams the metering valve at wide open position ie full fuel ..like max power.........KABOOM. Some here can tell you they were very lucky to be able to stop theirs, but who wants to try it next. If you need the proper info/TSB PM me an email addy.

I had the same problem for a looooong time. I chased it for yrs, then I just happened to replace the fuel filter and used a filter wrench to tighten the crap out of it when I put on the new one. No more air leak problem . try it. OkieGringo
Thanks for all the info, I'm not to sure about taking off solenoid cover on IP pump, after info that metering valve could be an issue. I replaced the the rubber washer in the water drain valve just in case that was an issue, when i put the filter back on made sure it was tight. I will keep checking the lines for leaks.
