Fuel system problems???

OK, new issue with differnt truck. This one is a 1994 Ford F350 with a 7.3 turbo-not a powrstroke. Having trouble keeping it started. He changed the fuel filter and has put some seafoam and lucas in it. He says it seems as if it is sucking air somewhere but cannot seem to find the source. The auxillary fuel tank is empty, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I don't think it has ever been completely empty though. Just looking for a place to start. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Okay, let's see if we can't get this one diagnosed and fixed.. When the truck starts does it blow any smoke...If so what color.

Does it start then die and then start up and run.....

May be the lift pump gone south. Try this test:

(thanks Pete)
Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .

If it is the lift pump, and you get a new one be sure to follow the instructions for installation with the newer style "arm" as it can cause internal damage if not put in right.

What level is the fuel tank at? make sure the tank being used is at least 3/4 full..

Start with these tests and report back

do a vaccum test on the fuel pump(good reason to tell the wife you need a new tool!) put a clear fuel return line off of the fuel filter(see in my pictures).if you see bubbles in the clear line you are getting air in the system
