Glass Pack?

I am replacing my stock muffler with something cheap till I get the cash for a turbo. Will a glass pack be to loud? Any of you run one, if so how is it? And what about the walker big truck muffler, is it straight threw? Thanks.

Re: Glass Pack?

Wierd enough I once put on an old cat D2, and it made it really quiet, put another one on an old case 310 and made it quiet as well, and then I put one on a gasser car and it was loud as hell, dont ask me why, but they have a different effect on diesels. (my experience)

Re: Glass Pack?

Although not as cheap as a cheap glass pack muffler a Gibson muffler is staright through and not real loud like a glass pack. It sounds better than a stock muffler. If you were to do that you could always use the muffler with the turbo also.

My sig has the link for Gibson if you want to look at there site.

Re: Glass Pack?

My buddy runs a glasspack on his 6.9, mine is straightpiped(broke off in front of the muffler really...) Mine sounds like a gas bigblock with glasspacks, his, is quieter, and all the crackle is gone, and it's a low deep sound, like you get with a turbo muffler.
Very strange, considering my 460 got markedly louder over straightpiped with glasspacks.

Re: Glass Pack?

I replaced my muffler with a walker BTM and i love it. It is a straight through muffler and the BTM makes the IDI growl. At constant RPMs it sounds like a old cat front loader. I did notice a little better fuel economy on the highway along with more power. I chopped the old muffler off and replaced with the BTM in stock position and ran 3" pipe up to the Y pipe and used a 2.5-3 reducer and kept the stock tailpipe. After a couple minutes chopping everything and my friend welding the new unit on we were done in less than hour.

As far as the sound, its no different in the cab, until you put the windows down then you can hear the growl, but its not very noticable until 2000rpms WOT.

I got mine at napa, but i think summitt caries them too, fyi heres the part #

Re: Glass Pack?

I have a 3 inch pipe and glass pack. Not bad in cab but pretty loud under load for whoever the pipe is pointing at.

Re: Glass Pack?

I have dual 2" pipes with 18" long glass packs. It's pretty loud and crackles from 2200 rpm on up, especially under load. It's kind of obnoxious, but I like it!

Re: Glass Pack?

I liked the sound of the glass pack on mine with the turbo also. And it was the $15 special of the week!
