Glow Plug Problem
'91 Superduty (450). Has been starting fine until a month ago. WTS light has not been coming on and starts are hard. Cycling the key off and on repeatedly got enough relay time to heat GP to start. Experience with other trucks led me to believe it was a relay/control module problem. I checked and replaced one GP last week, replaced module/controller this week. The WTS light comes on briefly now but no GP heat, old controller gave some heat on short time but no light.?
Now, I can not get anything out of the new relay/controller. There is power at 3 terminals but not load (GP)side. It appears that the relay is not completing the ground circuit. I jumped that terminal to ground and truck started without any delay. Truck starts fine hot but problems cold (80 F ambient).
If it makes a difference, my guy that put the unit in swears he put the wires the same as last unit. I was not so sure. I went back to the dealer and checked. All seemed right but that little tag on the new unit says "CAUTION, white wire only this terminal". He put the relay control wire wire on that post. Could/did that make a problem with a new unit?
After not starting, I put the control wire on the other terminal. No change. Still power at three terminals but nothing on the load side (GP side).
I thought that there was a tempurature sensor but could not find it for certain. I found two units, one on the driver side head and another between that and the top (front) of the engine. Head unit was for water temp gauge. The other? Both were wired into injector harness.
What now?
