I have recently devloped a miss, it puffs smoke, not continually. There is a tick up high. coolant level is the same as it was. I hope its a rocker arm problem and not cavitation. i cannot tell which bank its coming from. where do I start on this?

89 250, 4x4 chromespoke wheels, 270000k, 4.10 gears with rear LS. stock everything else. Its loud, and smokes, but its paid for!
Gently open (crack 1/2 turn) each injector then close it. The injector that does not make a difference in performance at idle would be suspect. Try that and post back........cover the injector with a rag "High pressure".

Just went thru the same thing.....dead miss and tick with blue/gray smoke intermittenly......my problem was a hung injector causing the dead miss....truck shook like crazy at low speed.... Sounded like a loose rocker arm pecking! Anyway, I ended up having some major injector problems and had them all replaced......I cant tell you what a difference it made in performance and now I have no shake! Smooth running. And...no smoke!
Crack injector lines one at a time while it is running and find out which hole it is.If you find a bad one swap that injector with another on the other side and see if the noise followed it.If it did you got a bad injector.If it doesn't go away as you break the lines loose then take a stethiscope and listen to each bank and see what side it is coming from.Pull that valve cover.If it stops but doesn't follow the injector also pull the valve cover.Make sure nothing is loose or that a push rod didn't go though the rocker.If all is fine,check to see if you can rock a valve back and forth to make sure the guides are ok.
