greyish smoke?

Still working on the 89 F-350 that a lot of you have helped me with but have a few more bugs to stomp! By replacing # 8 valves, push rods, hydraulic lifters I have solved the skip on # 8.

When I put everything together and tried to crank the truck it would start up for a couple of seconds every time I tried and then shut off.
Finally took return line loose and truck ran fine. Traced the problem to the # 4 injector which I somehow must have clogged accidentaly. Replaced and seems to have fixed.

Next bug is when truck was purchased it smoked greyish smoke like a mosquito sprayer while going down the road and If I remember some at idle also. Now the truck doesnt smoke at idle but when I took for road test it showed up. I could compete with any mosquito truck.

While on road test I made it about 1/2 mile and truck shut off. I believe it ran out of fuel so I retrieved some fuel and bled schrader valve and cranked again. Made it back to shop fine and then, shut it off and cranked a few times and everything seemed o.k. so tonight my belief is just ran out of fuel.

Tomorrow I plan to do some more road testing but I do know that once I crank and bring up the R.P.M.s that the greyish smoke boils out.
Any body got any Insight as to where the poblem lies. I have posted several times the last couple of weeks and the old post show some of the specifics obout this engine and the problems associated with it.

Re: greyish smoke?

Sounds like you have a timing problem my friend. Needs to be set with a meter to be perfectly accurate. 1.5* ATDC @ 1400 RPM with the luminosity method or 8.5* BTDC @ 2000 RPM with the pulse method. If you know you fixed the engine, it's probably the timing or possibly injectors/pump, but I would check timing first. Also bear in mind if you get air in the system it will act funny and blow smoke too.
