group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

Anybody fit some 31's under the hood? I had some in my '86 no problem. I can get Interstate 950cca 190rc for $33/each. But this truck uses the bottom clamp hold down and the grp 31's I can get are bigger (obviously) and don't have the feet. I am not too worried about the hold down..mostly if they fit in the tray...etc.

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

I've been running them in mine for over 3 years now-post type, the stud type with adaptors are too tall. They just barely fit into the trays, and I had to move the harness of the left side a little, use top mount hold downs and j-hooks but they work great.

Huff, if you think you got 'ouched', In Baja I paid $150.00 each for my Exide AGMs(1000ca). I did soo much business with them that they gave me 'credit' and I paid them $100/mo for 3 months. I don't know their cca rating, but, I really like no terminal corrosion and never need to add water. They seem to be handling this cold weather here. OkieGringo

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

I'll let you know how mine fit in a couple of days. I just picked up a pair of 31s stud top 1125ca, 1000cca 185 res for $63 ea at Truck Pro
Now to squeeze them in. Looks like they'll fit no problem, but I am going to put a sheet of rubber over top of the connections for safety , I sure wouldn't want that much juice arcing off the hood on a bump :-)

I've got a day of battery mountng/cable making/starter mounting commming up.

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

Well, I had time to put one of the new group 31s' in my ;92 f350 today on the passenger side. I had to move the battery tray about 1/4" inboard to clear the wire harness that goes behind it.I also had to cut off the exposed bolt end for a ground wire that was poking into the battery.
I stacked 3 washers to space it out from the wall, and I still had to shoehorn the battery into the tray. There will be plenty of clearance for the positive terminal with it on the inboard side, the outboard ground terminal will be mighty close to the hood, but that won't hurt anything. It looks like I'll have to move the tray on the drivers side as well.

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

Well I got around to putting the drivers side battery in, it was an even tighter fit. I had to space the tray a little further out from the wall and shoehorn the battery in, but they're in now and with 1125 ca each that thing spins like a maniac. start up is almost instant now when cold.I made up a full set of 3/0 cables for the stud top batteries and 6ga for the tie in hot and ground wires. Along with new starter glow plugs and controller I should be good for quite a while.

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

I was tired of dual, dead, leaking, rust machines, in the front of my truck pounding my radiator support to death, cracked all over, so I ditched the factory mounting location and mounted one $311 oddessey
PC2150 group 31 battery. I didnt buy it here wish I did now http://www.batterystore.com/Odyssey/PC2150.htm

I used 2/0 cable from the battery to the starter and 1/0 to the solonoid. used a 2/0 ground to the frame, and the battery was hung under the bed on the pass side behind the cab.

truck starts every time no more crank and no start, even at temps as low as 30 degrees it cranks right up, let me say it does crank about 5 seconds then fires, being in florida I have disconnected my pesky glow plug system 5 years ago, still fires up no hassles.
hope this can help, I am very pleased with this battery.

Re: group 31 batteries in '92 truck?

Any way you can send me a few pics of how you mounted the battery to me at 60bugeye@cebridge.net. Sounds like something I am very interested in doing.

Thanks
Leo
