help

First I want to thank this form its gave me alot of help

Im in Vandalia IL from Texas, drove 700 miles today and got off highway to spend the night and my van died like it ran out of fuel as soon as I slowed down to a idel. Its been about 75 miles since a fill up. I checked the shrader (SP) valve on the fuel filter ( has brand new fuel filter as of 4 days ago) and it has presser when cranking. what happens when the injector pump goes out?
Its done the thing where it dies right after starting in the morning when below freezing 3 times latey, but not every morning.
I have read all the info on here about this kind of stuff but am still a little lost. If it is the injector pump how long would it normaly take to put on in a parking lot with it being cold as hell. or should I pay to have someone do it.

Welcome to TDS

First re tighten your filter top and bottom.........

Your situation sounds like air in the system........ engine starts on the fuel in the IP bowl then stalls due to air in the fuel line.....not enough in the IP to make injector pressure required.

Do you see any wet spots on the IP or lines to it, fuel filter header (check the top where the black connector is), return lines from the injectors etc.

If you can park it with the nose down hill versus up hill.......forces fuel to the filter rather than drawing it away....... temporary fix.

read some info from .....Ford diesel 6.9 7.3 IDI reair in the system and locations on the filter header and drain base....... this looks bad for the filter/assembly but he has covered all possible causes...... There are other areas too, we just need to work to them.

more help

it started this morning with some love on the foot peddal after stiting for 4 hours.
almost died again at idel after 60 sec. but keep it running. there is fuel leaking out of the top of the fuel filter housing at the elec. connector, a nice steady flow when running. I cant find anything about the filer houseing on that page.

That will most likely be the fuel heater leaking. Some have found it is just the o-rings but I had one today that was leaking fuel through the actual electrical connector. A quick call to my injector shop and all they do is pull the heater and install a plug to seal it up after they remove the heater. I'm just going over this one and will post back after I decide what to do.

Is it possible that your idle screw on the pump vibrated loose and backed out while you were running down the highway? Now when you let off the throttle the pump closes completely down?

Will it idle when the cold idle solenoid is set?

Im up and going

Im sure it was the fuel heater leaking caused this. I rigged it up with some 60sec epoxy and its working just fine, anouther 200 miles down the road. It seems to run fine with out the heater pluged in (I cant plug it in anymore I filled it over with a big mound of glue) and its cold as crap up hear. Should I replace that heater when I get home, does it matter and its 150.00 I could use that money to pay off some of the credit cards for the fuel to get hear.

Thanks for all of everybodys help

The internet is so bad a**

That's good news. If it's running fine I wouldn't bother replacing the heater.
