Hello experts,
I've decided to sell my truck as it just doesn't get used like it should. I have a guy coming to see it in a couple of hours so I went to get some fuel and she just clicks. The batteries are charged so I need some advice to get her going please. I did wash her a couple of weeks ago and sprayed off the engine as well, however I had no starting issues until now. I've done this before with no negative results - I hope I didn't mess something up!

Just thought I'd mention that the glow plugs are cycling and after the light goes out when I crank it just clicks. Sounds like it may be coming from the solenoid area if that helps.
All input appreciated please - I'm in a bit of a panick.

How many miles?
When was the last time the Lift Pump was replaced?
How about the fuel filter?
How full are the fuel tanks?
Any prior syptoms?
How long, (exactly) does the WTS light stay illuminated?
Why panick? Got a big date tonight?, Is it parked in a No Parking area?
Stick or auto?

on my 6.9 there was a wire from the starter to the relay on the fender. That wire broke on me, and had to be changed. It went to the sol. on top of the started. Also I would start by replacing the relay on the fender and check the battery connedtions. If she wont crank has to be starter or power related.
Turn on the lights and see what they do when trying to crank. If they go out or almost out then you have bad batteries or connections.

The problem is it won't crank. 222000km on it and she has fuel with a recent filter etc. Changed return lines and injector seals etc and WTS light stays on about a minute or so. When I turn the key to start I get 1 click - that's it. It's an auto by the way and I have a guy coming over to see it in about an hour because it's for sale.

The one on the fender wall is too cheap to check, just replace it $12US, NAPA,
yes, there is methods to check it, but it requires prior education and a meter.

from my own experience when it clicks but wont cranck it is the starter. it happened to me, i replaced the starter and problem solved.

Jump the two large posts on the relay on the fender see if it starts the starter motor. The other thing could be the gear shift wiggle it the MLP may be just out of alignment, or put it in nuetral.
Last but not least try to roll the engine over in a clockwise rotation at the crankshaft/balancer 15/16 socket see if it is hydrolocked, since you stated WASHED engine.

Give your starter a tap with a hammer (not too hard) then try it. If that doesn't work get someone to turn the key while you tap the starter. When my starter went I did that for a couple months until I fixed it. It was intermittent at first so I let it slide.

Do you get one click and if you try the key again, does it click again? and what do the lights do(this will give you a sign of the condition of the batteries)See if it will spin by hand, Still sounds like a power, starter, or hydro lock problem....

If he's driven it since the "wash job" (said it was a couple of weeks ago)it wouldn't be likely to be hydrolocked. Sounds to me like a bad solonoid. I'd try jumping the terminals as stated above before I tried anything else...
Sorry to all the loyal 7.3 guys, but I traded my '91 7.3 in on a 2002 F250 Ex cab V10 4x4. SCT Xcalibrator2 with tunes by Powerplay Performance. 285/75/16 Toyo M/T's. Took a long time to get used to the ping-pop of a cooling catalytic converter...LOL.
'85 Bronco swapped up to a 302 4bbl from the 300 I6, NP435 4spd, NP208, 32x11.50x15 Radial RVT's, Soon to be 6.9 turbo powered.
86 F350 Cab&Chassis with a dump bed. 2wd 6.9 and 4 spd tranny. No mods to engine.

Several possibilities after a wash job:
Excess water sitting in the head (low spot for the GP)...water may have seeped through a loose GP into the cylinder....or
Water ingestion into the air cleaner/intake via the hold down bolt.....can cause hydrolock....

Hello everyone and thank you all for the input. The guy never showed - figures. I did however get it going after charging the batteries. I guess when I blew off my alternator belt awhile ago it must have drained the batteries down more than I thought. All is well - so far!!!
