High Idle

I have two questions:

1) What is the high idle setting supposed to be on these trucks? I thought it was 1050 RPM's or something??

2) Where do you buy the diode for the switch activated high idle? Is this just a radio shack deal? Any specs on these??

Thanks,

mike

Re: High Idle

You can set the high idle to whatever you like. I always had mine set for about 900 rpms or there abouts.

For a diode you need to get a 1N4001 which will do you fine.

Travis, what diode? I've never heard of a diode in the fast idle circuit. OkieGringo

Re: High Idle

Okie....... If I've got it right, you put the diode on the harness power wire to the fast idle. Correctly installed this stops 12V power from going back to the timing advance. When you want a faster idle speed you flip the 12V power switch and set the plunger. I'm going to try this one myself.

Re: High Idle

I have not done this yet, but you are exactly on target for what I want to do.

When I start the truck, it idles at around 800, and idles up to about 1800 before it kicks off the high idle and timing advance. Should I just adjust it warm, or is the IP supposed to compensate for this?

Re: High Idle

High idles are always adjusted warm because of all the variables involved cold (how cold exactly would you adjust it?) The purpose is not to make the truck idle that much faster when cold but to make sure it will idle at all. I don't know the spec for sure but I think it is something like 800 with the engine at operating temp, and I don't know if that is with the timing advance or without.

Re: High Idle

Whew, for a minute there I thought I was having a 'Senior Moment' or another attack of CRS . However, oof the top of my head, I'd just use a DPDT switch, in one position for the 'High Idle' and the other for the normal . I don't like foolin' with diodes unless absolutely necessary. OG

Re: High Idle

the problem is that the timing advance will backfeed unless a diode in installed. I can't think of how a DPDT would adress this problem.

Re: High Idle

How do you exactly set your high idle?

What is the optimum highidle RPM value? I think mine is around 750-800

Are there any Pro's/Con's in turning the high idle switch higher? Will your truck warm faster, or is it better for a diesel engine to warm up to a faster RPM?

I once heard that it is hard on a diesel engine (cold) to low idle when it is cold out. And that one shoudl warm his truck up to a high idle....Is this true? anyone have any thoughts on these questions.

Thanks,
Jared

Actually, a SPDT would work. Connect the wire from the 2-prong sensor, that has the connector with 2 wires to the CTA. Then cut the single wire from CTA to the FIS. Add a piece of wire to the CTA end and run it to one of the outside terminals of the SPDT(On-OFF-ON). Then connect the center terminal to the end of the single wire to the FIS. Now, connect the other outside terminal of the SPDT to a batt +. Clear as mud? How do I draw a diagram and post it? OG

Re: High Idle

To 'SET' the high idle, depress the pedal half way, then turn on the key. To adjust it, use a 1/4" wrench to turn the plunger rod out for higher, in for lower. OG
