I have a 92 7.3 with 250k miles I do alot of towing pulling 15k lbs recently going up large inclines I'll get some black smoke not alot but whenI get over the hill or mountain I'll get gray smoke when on the flat accelerating it does go away after a short while
all tempatures are well within normal ranges fresh fluid changes oil trans and rear end
and another question what is the hp of a 7.3 stock and can i increase it with something simple or do I have to much wear and tear on my poor truck.
thanks
6.9 - Max H.P. 175 Torque 318 ft. lb.
7.3 - Max H.P. 185 Torque 338 ft. lb.
6.9 max torque at 1800 RPM
7.3 max torque at 1600 RPM
Both max HP at 3300 RPM.
Any wet spots on the fuel lines, fuel filter header etc.....

would turbo put to much strain on the lower end with the amount of miles I have?
i dont think so. if you dont go with a turbo turn up your IP and go with a better flowing air intake and exaust set up. there are turbo IPs and Injestors also.

The lower end of the motor is not an issue. Never heard (not to say it can't happen) of an IDI with bottom end failure with a turbo. Now headgasket are another story..........More so with the 6.9 than the 7.3. I'd say turbo and enjoy.

The bottom end is pretty strong. The headgaskets are the weak point. I ran over 200k on my first motor (turboed at 75k and ran 12psi) till it lost a head gasket, it then hydrolocked and I lost the bottom end. I would do a turbo, intake and exhaust. If you don't want to spend the money, start with intake and exhaust with an IP adjustment. REMEMBER if you adjust your IP/Install a turbo you MUST install a pyrometer. These motors get real hot real fast after you tweak them.

I installed mine (turbo) at 246,000 miles after swapping the heads for reman. and repaired all engine oil leaks. I resealed the fuel return and replaced the glow plugs also. Repair/replace anything that is suspect before/during the turbo install. It made all the difference for towing.
